Defending champions remain in contention for Girls’ Cups

Murrayfield Wanderers are one step closer to defending their Brewin Dolphin Under-18 Girls’ Cup title having moved into the semi-finals.

Langholm and Community School of Auchterarder also remain in contention for the under-15 trophy, which they currently share, and could meet again in the final this year. They are the only confirmed teams in the under-15 semis so far.

Biggar or The Nicolson Institute / Stornoway will be Langholm’s contender once they’ve played their quarter-final tie. For Community School of Auchterarder they wait to see if they will meet Crieff High School / Perth Academy or Hillhead-Jordanhill. Times and dates are yet to be confirmed for these outstanding under-15 fixtures.

Back in the under-18 competition, The Nicolson Institute / Stornoway will meet Ayr for their semi-final, while the defending champions will travel to The Community School of Auchterarder or to play a Borders composite team.

Murrayfield Wanderers head coach, Michelle Ovens, said: “This year’s tournament has got off to a great start for Murrayfield Wanderers. The girls are excited and focused on defending their title and as ever competition this year is a high standard and we treat every game like it’s the final.

Our next opponents have not been decided yet as they still need to play their game, but both teams are good sides and if we are against Auchterarder this would make a great game as the final last year was close and showed girls’ rugby at its best.

“If we’re drawn against the Borders this will be the first time in a couple of years that we have played them but they always play to a high standard.

“As a team we can’t wait for the next round to get underway and keep defending our title.”

In the first round of the senior competition Nicolson Institute / Stornoway and Ayr were given a bye to the semi-finals while Murrayfield Wanderers saw off Bell Baxter High School / Buckhaven High School, 67-12.

For the juniors, Langholm put in a confident 88-0 victory over Alva Academy / Alloa High School, while Community School Auchterarder beat Oban High School, 24-10. so far.

The semi-finals are to be played by Saturday 18 January.
