Tennent’s Women’s Premier PREVIEW | Stirling County v Stewartry

Stewartry Sirens travel 100 miles north this weekend to take on Stirling County in the third round of the Tennent’s Women’s Premier League (Sunday 9 September, kick-off 2pm).

Stewartry will be looking to put in a strong performance, having had a tough first encounter away against Hillhead Jordanhill (43-5) in the first round. The Castle Douglas-based side are currently in sixth place in the table, matching the points tally of Corstorphine and Cartha Queen’s Park, with goal difference the deciding factor.

Stirling County have enjoyed a strong start to the season, beginning their campaign with a 12-70 win over Annan Women in the opening round. The team backed this up in their first home fixture of the season against Watsonians. What potentially looked like a narrow defeat turned into a three-point, 24-21, victory in the final minutes.

The result has propelled Stirling County into second place in the league standings, on equal points with leaders Hillhead Jordanhill but trailing slightly on goal difference.

Stirling County Head Coach, Rob Storey, said: "We have had a strong start to the season with two bonus point wins and we hope to build on those performances.

Stewartry will offer another challenge and with some changes to our line up for this fixture it will be interesting to see if we can maintain our momentum."

In last year’s Premier League, Stirling County finished the season in fourth place with Stewartry just behind in fifth. Both teams will be hoping this weekend’s fixture will help them progress up the league table in the 2018/19 competition.
