BT Cup semi-finals | Ayr host Hawks & Melrose welcome County
The semi-finals of the BT Cup take place tomorrow, Saturday 25 March, with a west derby between Ayr and Glasgow Hawks at Millbrae and an away clash for Stirling County with Melrose at The Greenyards making for two exciting ties. Ayr and Hawks have impressed throughout the BT Cup rounds and in the BT Premiership this season, with Ayr pushing past Borders side Jed-Forest 36-7 and Hawks overcoming Gala 53-29 in their respective cup quarter-finals.The Millbrae men have defeated the city outfit twice in the BT Premiership this season and recorded significant victories on both occasions.Ayr Head Coach, Calum Forrester, said: “Having had the last few weeks off, the players have been able to recover and we are in the fortunate position of having a full strength squad.Our preparation has gone well over the last few weeks as we welcome Glasgow Hawks to Millbrae for the BT Cup semi-final. The teams know each other well and Hawks will be a well-drilled side going into the match.”Hawks are a dangerous side and pose threats throughout their team so our defence will be key.”Ayr will also meet Hawks on Saturday 1 April at Millbrae when the two go head-to-head in the play-offs of the BT Premiership with Melrose and Currie involved in the other semi-final of the league.Glasgow Hawks Head Coach, Finlay Gilles, said: “We are now into the business end of the season and play our first of two back-to-back semi-finals against Ayr over the next two weekends.Ayr have beaten us twice already this season, so we know the enormity of the task that faces us and we look forward to challenging our best against their best.”Ayr are an extremely physical team and have no real obvious weakness in their squad or game play.”In the other BT Cup quarter-final, Melrose host Stirling County after the Borders outfit defeated Heriot’s and County edged out Boroughmuir with the final play of their quarter-final tie.Melrose have recorded two wins from two in this season’s BT Premiership against County and look the favourites to claim a final spot after topping the league table following consistent performances. Melrose Head Coach, Rob Chrystie, said: “This weekend’s BT Cup semi-final game against Stirling is sure to be a cracker. Stirling will be at full strength and desperate to prolong their season with a final at BT Murrayfield.We have prepared well and understand the challenges of playing a semi-final.
