BT National League Cup Reaction | Saints cap ‘fantastic season’ with cup win

Dumfries Saints Head Coach Rudi Urbach has praised his side’s style and work ethic in their shock win over BT National League Division 1 opposition Kelso.

Saints scored five tries and restricted their opponents to a single try either side of half-time to record a 30-17 victory at Lasswade.

Dumfries Saints Head Coach Rudi Urbach said: “It’s fantastic. We’ve being saying all week that the form book goes out the window in a final like this.

We’ve got massive respect for Kelso, they’re a wonderful club with an amazing history.

“We always knew we had a chance and the team stuck manfully to their task – I’m so proud.”

Not only did the result go against the league standings but the team from the west did it in style, crossing the whitewash on numerous occasions from short and long-range.

Urbach added: “They back themselves to score tries and throw the ball around which is really good.

There was a fantastic crowd here today and I’m glad that we did the final justice.

“It’s been a fantastic season for the club, this is the highest we’ve finished in the leagues in almost a hundred years and now we’ve got the league cup to go with it.”

Dumfries Saints are also in contention to join Kelso next year in BT National League Division 1 with re-scheduled matches still to be played.

Should Hamilton take two or fewer points from their closing game at home to Whitecraigs then Dumfries Saints will be promoted to their highest ever league.
