BT Premiership Preview: Ayr prepare for tough trip to Borders

This Saturday, Melrose host Ayr at The Greenyards in what looks to be an enticing match to finish the calendar year, kick-off 2pm.Melrose sit top of the table on 55 points while Ayr are behind on 54, and with both having won 11 from 13 games this season this looks to be a fiercely competitive fixture. The two teams last met in round five of the BT Premiership when Ayr secured a narrow 11-7 victory over Melrose at home which will focus the Borders side to also win at home to retain their leading league position.Last weekend Melrose played Gala at home in a Borders derby try-fest, with the hosts defeating Gala 57-15.Consequently, Melrose will be confident heading into their upcoming fixture against Ayr who clinched a narrow 44-41 win over Hawick at Millbrae who sit in tenth place in the table.Ayr Head Coach Callum Forrester has made some changes in preparation for Saturday; with Ross Curle moving to stand-off to join David Armstrong in the half-backs, and Cameron Taylor and Richard Dalgleish starting on the wings.Released from Glasgow Warriors, Pat MacArthur, Adam Ashe (making his debut for the club), James Malcolm and Djustice Dears-Duru join Ayr for their trip to the Borders.Forrester said: “Last week the players showed real character to come away with the victory having been 21 points down during the second half.We know that we cannot afford to find ourselves in a similar situation this Saturday against a dangerous Melrose side. The game at Millbrae earlier this season was a close affair and we expect the same again in what I’m sure will be a physical encounter.”Murdo McAndrew returns to Melrose’s starting team after injury, and Struan Hutchison moves onto the bench after an impressive BT Premiership debut.Head Coach Rob Chrystie also welcomes Edinburgh Rugby’s Nick Beavon and Lewis Carmichael who have been released to play. Chrystie looks forward to welcoming Ayr to The Greenyards for an undoubtedly cracking game of rugby, and said: “Both teams know each other well from previous games and we understand that this game will come down to fine margins and probably decided by a moment of brilliance or a mistake.Hopefully this game will live up to its expectations and be a fitting spectacle for the last game to be played on The Greenyards in 2016.”Elsewhere, the third and fourth placed teams play each other in Glasgow as Heriot’s travel to Old Anniesland to face Glasgow Hawks with hopes of building on their 23-17 win over Boroughmuir on Saturday.Hawks almost suffered an away defeat at the hands of Watsonians, but managed to fend them off and leave with a 36-38 win, but Head Coach Finlay Gillies knows his men will need to put in an 80-minute performance to remain competitive at the top.Fifth and sixth place also battle it out this Saturday, as Currie host Watsonians and seek to win at home in order to better their chances of making their way into the top four, as they sit one point behind fourth placed Heriot’s.Currie will be confident going into this fixture after defeating Stirling County 19-27, while Watsonians will be keen to improve after losing at home to Hawks on Saturday.Boroughmuir sit in eighth place on 22 points, with Gala and Hawick both close behind on 21 points respectively. Therefore, the ‘Muir will be determined to secure a home win against Hawick, but know the Borders side will be ready to impress after almost defeating Ayr away on Saturday.Hawick Head Coach Nikki Walker hopes the return of Will Henu and Jack Cosgrove will give his side the experience and quality they will need to ensure they repeat last week’s performance but also close out the match with a win.Gala host Stirling County at Netherdale with the visitors looking for a win as they are one point behind Watsonians who are in sixth place on 25 points.Gala will hope playing on home turf gives them the extra edge they need to conquer Stirling, especially as they sit ninth on 21 points, with Hawick also on 21 points in tenth place.Stirling County Head Coach David Adamson has prepared his team for this weekend’s match by taking time with his squad to analyse their game.Adamson believes that if his men focus on the positives rather than dwelling on missed opportunities, Stirling will be in position to seal victory.BT Premiership Round 14 (Saturday 17 December)Melrose v Ayr, the Greenyards, 2pmMelrose: Fraser Thomson; Ross McCann, Nyal Godsmark, George Taylor, Austin Lockington; Craig Jackson, Murdo Mcandrew; Jamie Bhatti, Russell Anderson, Nick Beavon, James Head, Lewis Carmichael, Neil Irvine Hess, Grant Runciman CAPTAIN, Ruaridh Knott.
