BT Premiership ROUND-UP | Watsonians power past Heriot’s
A determined, clinical Watsonians side eased past capital rivals, Heriot’s, in what was an action-packed Edinburgh derby (17- 46).
It was a gutsy, spirited performance from both Edinburgh contingents in front of a fervent Goldenacre crowd – and with a play-off place in sight, the stakes were high.
It didn’t take long for Heriot’s to initiate the scoring, as Robbie Mulvena collected a loose ball before storming over the line to score.
The visitors were not disheartened by the early lead, as they were soon awarded a penalty when Heriot’s were pinged for not rolling away, with Ali Harris slotting the ball through the uprights.
The hosts were soon on the charge again, as Tom Wilson drilled a precise cross-field kick down the touchline before John Rae gathered the ball to race into the corner.
The Myreside men began to pose a threat when Michael Fedo muscled his way through the defence to score and Ali Harris capped it off with a successful conversion to bring the score back to a level.
The try appeared to ignite Watsonians’ attack – as the visitors began to pick up the pace – moving the ball wide and through the hands before finding Jason Harries who dotted down over the whitewash.
Fedo saw yellow in the 31st minute, from which Heriot’s profited when Jack Turley bludgeoned over the line from close range and Jones added the extras, bringing the score to honours even yet again.
Heriot’s were unable to fight off a late comeback at the end of the first-half as Rory Hutton weaved his way through the opposition to build on the visitor’s tally.
Half-time: Heriot’s 17 – 24 Watsonians
Watsonians were soon in command again, as a try by winger Mark Bertram helped to open up a substantial gap in the scoreline.
The tables were turned, however, when Michael Allen was shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle.
As momentum began to build, Heriot’s charging attack was brought to a halt by Watsonians’ aggressive defence which prevented them from crossing over the whitewash.
Errors continued to mar the progress of the home side, as Ali Harris nudged the visitors ahead again with another successful penalty.
With Heriot’s defence in disarray, Watsonians soon took advantage again as Robert Kay powered over the line, with Harris converting the score.
The visitors had the upper-hand again when Heriot’s Michael Liness received a red card for alleged stamping.
Rory Hutton had the final say for Watsonians with a perfectly timed interception as he cantered down the midfield to bring the game to a close with a thrilling try.
Full-time: Heriot’s 17 – 46 Watsonians
Elsewhere, Melrose are continuing to have a difficult start to the new year, as they suffered a defeat to Currie Chieftains at Malleny Park.
Hawick continued to enjoy their winning momentum as they edged out Glasgow Hawks at Mansfield Park, while Ayr overcame hosts Stirling County.
In a survival of the fittest at Fullarton Park, Boroughmuir came out on top against Marr.
