Midlothian Walking Rugby group support local community with £1,000 donation
Normally at this time of the year, Midlothian Walking Rugby group would be making plans on how they will use the weekly training fees they’ve saved up for a team evening out.
But for a second year running, the group decided to put their collection towards supporting their local community by making a £500 donation to the Midlothian Foodbank, which was matched by their shirt sponsor, 99 Ventures.
At the start of the month, the team presented a £1,000 cheque to Janice Burns from Midlothian Foodbank.
The group, who have been formed since 2016, is part of Midlothian Council’s ‘Ageing Well’ project, which offers activities to people aged 50 and over.
The team train on a weekly basis utilising facilities in partnership with Dalkeith RFC.
David West who is the ‘Ageing Well’ Worker for Midlothian Council and volunteer coach of the walking rugby team said: “Once again it has been humbling that the team have decided to donate to the foodbank, at this time of year, especially due to the cost of living crisis. We do hope that it can make a difference to individuals and families in our community.
“We would also like to thank Dalkeith RFC in their continual support and to Alan Stables of 99 Ventures in sponsoring our team kit and his generosity in doubling the donation made to the foodbank.”
Lesley Nicholson, Scottish Rugby Regional Manager for the East said: “I’d like to extend my thanks on behalf of Scottish Rugby to Midlothian Walking Rugby group for their generous contribution Midlothian Foodbank. Their kindness will no doubt go a long way to supporting local families in their time of need.”
