Full time: Scotland A 19-17 Chile

Periods of dominance from the Scots were underlined by at times an outstanding Chilean defence.

Standouts on the night were Player of the Match, flanker Douglas, scrum half Dobie, winger Reed and off the bench impact Ben Afshar.

That’s all from us tonight at Hive, thank you so much for tuning in and we’ll look to keep you up to date with everything Scotland v Australia tomorrow at Scottish Gas Murrayfield.

That match has a 1:40pm kick off and will conclude Scotland’s involvement in this season’s Famous Grouse Autumn Nations Series – it’s not one to miss!

FT

Chile score a deserved try to end the match

A mistake comes and Scotland have the throw just inside their own 22.

But it’s not all over, and after perhaps trying to be too smart in the midfield, a connection between Tuipulotu and McDowall misfires and the pass is intercepted by the substitute Garafulic.

He pounced on the pass and goes coast to coast to score under the post to wrap things up.

Garafulic converts his own try and that brings the game to an end. (19-17)

Scotland’s Douglas is named Player of the Match after some outstanding carries and huge defensive workload tonight.

77'

Chile creeping up the pitch

A series of penalties allow Chile to advance up the field as the clock ticks down in Scotland’s favour.

The latest is for tackling the man in the air at the lineout and it’s thumped deep into Scotland’s 22. They’ll have to defend staunchly for the final stanza here.

71'

Yellow card for Chile

Raimundo Martínez was yellow carded in the lead up to that penalty try, leaving the visitors with 14 for the final throes of this match.

71'

Penalty try Scotland!

After a scrum penalty to Scotland, a lineout drive gets up to the 5m line before it breaks away and the ball does cross the Chile line, but it’s held up and adjudged to be a penalty try!

That extends Scotland’s lead to nine now, with nine minutes remaining. (19-10)

69'

Right on the try line now

A penalty is given to Scotland and it’s tapped quickly. After a few quick phases, a pass is thrown but it’s intercepted by Garafulic who speeds off towards halfway.

A brilliant tackle from McCann sees a penalty given to Scotland for the Chilean holding onto the ball too long, and it’s fired back into the 22.

So nearly a try for Scotland as the ball is JUST over the head of Reed’s head, who – had he caught it – would’ve fallen over for a certain try. Unfortunately though, it goes out of play.

Richardson, Jare Oguntibeju and Jack Brown are coming on for McCann, Marshall Sykes and D’Arcy Rae.

66'

More promising rugby

Scotland do indeed seem to be stepping on the gas and the gaps are opening slowly in the stoic Chilean defence.

Dobie thought he found a gap, only to be wrapped up in a tackle. He pops the ball to McCann but he can’t keep hold of it and it goes to ground forwards.

The resulting play sees Chile lose the ball inside their 22 and it’s snapped up with a rolling maul rumbling towards the line for what would be the third Scottish try of the night.

62'

Subs rolling on

Gregor Hiddleston and Ben Muncaster are coming off for Harri Morris and Liam McConnell.

There can’t be many left on the bench now, as Scotland look to put their foot on the accelerator.

59'

Chances popping up now

This is more like it from Scotland – they look much more threatening. The restart sees a nice break and team play as Reed finds space down the near side, but ultimately it comes to nothing.

Jamie Bhatti’s night has come to an end as he comes off for Michael Jones.

58'

A beautiful try from Scotland!

A knock in after a high ball in the midfield leads to a brilliant break from Afshar, who beats one, two, then three and four.

A great fend on the fullback, but he’s scragged just a metre short of the try line. He has the presence of mind to pop the ball to vice captain Tom Dodd, who levels up the scores!

Thompson converts the try and the goes off for 22, Ben Healy. (12-10) Scotland lead!

52'

Chile opportunities continue

Another penalty against Scotland in the midfield – this time for dragging the tackle out of play after the Chilean player’s knee hit the deck.

They kick to the corner and will have a lineout 10 out from Scotland’s line.

After a couple of promising phases it is Scotland this time who win the penalty – for Chile holding on – and it’s taken quickly.

Through the hands it goes but Ross McCann opts to kick it and it goes out on the full – so we go back to a couple metres outside of Scotland’s 22 for a Chile throw.

47'

Chile add to their lead!

Chile, now, are the ones threatening the scoreboard

A tackle was adjudged to have taken place in the air on a jumper during the lineout, and Chile will have a crack at the posts to extend their lead.

Santiago Videla knocks it over and Chile have a five-point lead now. (5-10)

46'

Chile bounce back

Once again though, the opportunity comes to nothing. A penalty is given and Chile are able to relieve the pressure by thumping the ball into touch near Scotland’s 22.

44'

Opportunities come knocking

Scotland have an opportunity in the centre of the park, as they forced a scrum turnover by holding the ball up.

McDowall has also returned to the field after his 10-minute sin bin. He’s straight back to the bench though, with Ben Afshar coming on in his place.

41'

Second half kicks off

Thompson restarts things here at Hive Stadium. Scotland now attacking towards the Murrayfield end.

Chile claim on the far side and the game is back underway, with the visitors leading by a slim margin.

19:56

A snapshot of the first half

HT

Half time: Scotland A 5-7 Chile

Scotland look to be coming back into it in the final three or four minutes. A couple of crunching but fair tackles in the midfield leave the Scots in prime real estate down the field.

Side to side they go but the visitors’ defence holds firm. Sadly for Scotland it’s lost and hoofed away down the field.

Another promising attack for the home side ends in no threat to the scoreboard, and that will conclude the first half.

The men in blue will begin the second half a man down with McDowall in the sin bin for at least another five minutes.

36'

Chile the more threatening side

After another period of pressure from Chile, the ball is nicked by Douglas at a lineout for the visitors just five out from the Scotland line. The home side clears, but Chile steal it straight back and conduct some threatening moves of their own.

A clever kick through ends in a lineout for the home side about 10 out from the Scotland line.

33'

A yellow card for the captain

And it is yellow for McDowall. The TMO and referee concluded that the captain croc rolled an opponent out of the ruck, and for that he sits at the sin bin.

33'

TMO check

There’s a TMO check going on here for the ruck immediately preceding the play being stopped for the Chilean 7 going off.

It looks like captain Stafford McDowall could be at the centre of things. They’re certainly taking their time over this one.

33'

Injury break

Play comes to a halt with a Chilean player prone on the ground. He’s clapped off the field, with the aid of a medic and a team mate.

Scotland started brightly and forced errors out of the visitors, but they have fought valiantly to get themselves not only back into the match, but in front on the scoreboard.

Number 19, Raimundo Martínez is on, and number 7, Clemente Saavedra is off for Chile.

30'

Try Chile!

A clever play nearly, nearly comes off for Scotland. And in a flash, with the ball gone to ground, Chilean fullback Luca Strabucchi pounces.

He thrashes the ball ahead and, sprinting after it, knocks it ahead again to the try line where he can fall onto it and claim Chile’s first points in the match.

He converts his own try and the visitors take the lead. (5-7)

27'

Scotland A amping it up

A scrappy period ends with Chile hoofing the ball downfield and Reed clamping onto it and returning with interest as he runs it back to halfway.

He pops up again just a minute later for another strong carry in the midfield. Thompson nudges a grubber through and it ends up just inside the Chile 22.

23'

Under pressure…

A high tackle from Scotland A just inside their 40m line sees Chile kick to the corner and amp up the pressure on the home side.

It’s a brilliant kick and sees the visitors just five or six metres out. It’s nicked by Scotland A though, and lumped downfield. It’s a huge, raking kick and gets all the way to the opposition 22. A penalty is ultimately given for Scotland A entering the ruck from the side.

In good news, Darcy Rae has passed his HIA and comes back onto the pitch for Richardson.

19'

Nearly a belter of a try for Scotland A

A scrum penalty for Scotland A sees Thompson clear for the home side to about the halfway line.

A great pick and go from Douglas sees the men in blue gain more and more metres inside the Chile half.

A brilliant move almost ends in a spectacular try for Mosese Tuipulotu but unfortunately for the home side the final pass travelled forward, so we’ll come back for a scrum to Chile.

16'

Period of possession for Chile

Chile now with a period of possession through the midfield. They hold onto it for a good three or four minutes before a break along the left wing comes unstuck and left winger Matías Garafulic is bundled into touch.

He gets the ball away before going out, but it’s knocked on and Scotland A have a scrum on their 22.

11'

Chile have an opportunity for points

In the meantime, Chile win a penalty a couple metres inside the Scotland A half and opt for a shot at the posts.

Inside centre Santiago Videla lines it up and slices it wide. Score remains 5-0 to the Scots.

10'

HIA for Scotland A prop

It looks like an HIA for Darcy Rae, so number 18 Finlay Richardson comes on in his place while the assessment is carried out.

8'

Scotland A piling on the pressure

It’s all Scotland A at the moment. Penalties are mounting and the Scots find themselves camped in Chile’s 22. A driving maul goes nowhere but the ball goes through the hands looking for an opening.

Freddy Douglas the latest to have a crack at the line and bowls over the Chilean fullback, who does well to hold on.

The ball goes back into the midfield and it’s turned over through the ruck, and Chile finally clear their lines. For now.

3'

A quickfire try from Arron Reed!

The resulting lineout on the 22 is spun wide and cleverly through the hands for Arron Reed of Sale Sharks to skip in untouched for Scotland A’s first try and first points of the night. A great start from the men in blue!

The conversion attempt from Ross Thompson goes wide. (5-0)

1'

Kick off!

We are underway now. Chile fullback Luca Strabucchi knocks it up into the air and it’s regathered by the men in red.

A settling period sees a penalty go the way of the home side for a Chilean coming into the ruck off their feet.
