A Scotland 7s girls’ squad have just returned from the weekend’s Sainsbury Schools Games with the award for Spirit of Rugby.The squad, coached by Chris Reid, competed at the event for the third year in succession, against teams from Wales, Ireland and the English regions. After making it to the Bowl semi finals, with a win over the Welsh, they lost to Ireland. However the squad didn’t make the return journey empty handed, captain Abi Evans – who hails from Oban – accepting the trophy for fair play and sportsmanship on behalf of her team [photo]  The Games were the culmination of a short develoment programme – just five weeks – and the experience was hugely beneficial to all involved.Reid said: The progression of the girls from the start of the weekend to the end has been great. Over the programme as a whole, we’ve seen them develop from being fairly raw rugby players, gelling into a good unit and a good team.The point where we beat Wales in sudden death, we came through by really playing as a team.The short programme kicks off with a trial to select an extended squad of 16, which is then reduced to 12 for the tournament. Performance reviews following the Games are then fed back to the relevant Scotland Women coaches as players look to progress with their rugby.Reid said: Last year three player went on to play full international rugby for Scotland and a number progressed into the under-20 programme.
