Jed-Forest have been awarded the first BT Club of the Month award for the 2016/17 season. The Borders club, whose 1st XV are currently sitting top of BT National League Division 1 after recording an unbeaten start to the season, have been recognised for maintaining high performance standards and developing all aspects of rugby. Both the 1st XV and the 2nd XV were unbeaten during their respective league matches during September, with Jed-Forest’s 2nd XV now sitting in second place in BT East Reserve League Division 1.The club have continued to develop their youth section over the seasons and have enjoyed recent success with three under-18 players featuring in 1st XV matches, as the club strives to grow the number of youth players involved in senior rugby.Work has continued across local schools with the interaction between Jed-Forest’s Development Officer Kevin Barrie, Scottish Rugby Modern Apprentice John Feeney, and primary schools in the town, resulting in more children becoming active and improving their classroom behaviours.Jed-Forest’s youth section are currently top of the Borders Town v Town Conference after a successful run of results across the age-groups places them ahead of Peebles.Jed-Forest President, Paul Cranston, said: “It’s been a great couple of months for us at Riverside Park. The 1st XV have made a fantastic start to the season and all areas of the club are also doing well. We are focusing on the development of our players from the youth section up and have seen results in terms of the number of youth players involved in our 1st XV.”Our aim this year is to finish in the top two, and although we have a long way to go, we have made a positive start.”Jed-Forest have been pro-active in developing girls’ rugby, with an under-15 girls’ side now competing in matches against Hawick, and various tournaments across the Borders and in Edinburgh. “It was great to reward former Jed-Forest youth and Scotland Women player, Chloe Rollie, with a youth achievement award recently. She is one of many noticeable graduates from the club, with Scotland full-back Stuart Hogg having played for our youth section as well as Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw starting his career with us, Cranston added. The club has re-established itself at the heart of the town’s community in recent years through it’s hosting of the annual music festival, Riverside Rock, as well as the renowned Jed Sevens tournament and the development of weekly lunches and events in the clubhouse.Cranston said: “Our Riverside Rock festival continues to grow every year and generates income for the development of the club, to improve clubrooms and changing room facilities. We have also donated money towards local organisations. For example, the town’s nursing home and the disabled swing in the village park have both received funding as a result of Riverside Rock.”Jed-Forest are also planning for the future and are currently looking at a facility development with the intention to apply for Scottish Rugby’s next wave of the Club Sustainability Fund.BT Scotland director Brendan Dick, said: “Jed-Forest are enjoying a cracking season so far, working hard to bring on their young players and promoting the sport and its values more widely. We congratulate the club on this award, which is richly deserved, and wish them continued success on and off the pitch for the rest of the season.”In winning the award, Jed-Forest will receive a prize of the value of£1000, through a 12-month BT Sport subscription and£200 cash.
