Lloyd scores five tries in Under-20 Women victory

Former Tynecastle High School pupil Rhona Lloyd scored five out of six tries in Scotland Women under-20’s 32-7 win this afternoon (Sunday 15 February) over the RAF at Meggetland, emulating the success of their male age grade counterparts on FridayHead Coach Alex Laybourne said: I’m so pleased, it’s a really good result and the girls did really well. Before the game we talked about playing with confidence and right at the start of the match, turned over four scrums in a row. Flanker Siobhan McMillan scored off the back of that fourth scrum. The remainder of the first half saw winger Lloyd run in a try from 50m with the RAF scoring a converted try to make it 10-7 in Scotland’s favour at half time.Adapting their game plan to make more use of the space in the second half, Rhona Lloyd ran in four more tries down the wing. Stand-off Hannah Illingworth controlled the game well and Lisa Thomson (centre) made some great line breaks. We looked fitter than the opposition and our skill set was more varied, added Laybourne.Individual people played really well and Rhona did score five tries but a lot of work was done beforehand to get her over the line – it was a great team effort to keep the RAF at bay.A sizeable crowd at Meggetland cheered on the girls, including a number of the Scotland Womem team who took on Wales at Broadwood yesterday, returning the favour as their age grade counterparts had cheered them on the previous evening. The girls now have a week off then return for a training day on 28 February prior to a tentative fixture against the Czech Republic on 14 March. They put in a really good performance today and I’m certain a group of these girls will be playing senior rugby for Scotland in a couple of years, said Laybourne. The potential fixture against the Czech Republic is due to be played at Bridgehaugh – details will be posted on the web site in due course.Scotland under-20 squad v RAF, Sunday 15 February, k/o 2pm, Meggetland 15.
