Two key appointments have been made as part of the new BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy structure.Following the launch of the Caledonia Academy last week, today’s news sees a further development in the north and the first advance for the Academy in the west. Stephen Gemmell, Scottish Rugby’s Head of Academy and Performance Programmes, explained: A pivotal role for each of our four Academies will be the Academy Manager.He or she will have the responsibility not simply to manage and nurture the Academy intake and staff but will also lead the relationships with clubs and other stakeholders in each area.Today’s appointments, which will be followed shortly by the remaining manager posts, underline, alongside the regional fixtures that we’re confirming, that the whole process is moving on apace.”The two BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy managers who are declared today are: •    Caledonia: Bruce Frame (pictured above right)•    West: Jamie Dempsey (above left)Bruce Frame is a 51-year-old who is currently a development manager with the Australian Rugby Union in the north-coast of New South Wales.He starts in his new role in mid-November.His grandparents hail from Scotland and he has always been very proud of his Scottish heritage.A former team-mate, as an outside back, of Michael Lynagh and Brett Papworth in an Australian under-17 squad in the 1980s, Frame enjoyed a ten-year premiership playing career, which included Australian Sevens honours.From 1995-2000 he worked in a key rugby development post for the Singapore Rugby Union, before returning to Australia, where he enjoyed a spell as general manager of the sports association at the University of New South Wales before moving to the ARU in 2008.CharacterI had been looking from a family perspective to move to the UK and when this role was advertised it was like a light coming on.  I thought it was a really strong fit for my background and it will be great to work for an aspirational rugby union that wants to achieve something that will make a real difference,” he said.I’m looking forward to getting started in Caledonia.  Geographically there might be certain similarities with the scale of the area I’ve been working in in Australia.Within the set-up I think I’ll get a good feel of where any of our recruits are at – not just on the rugby field but also their character.  If you are serious about developing sport then you have to have a skills development programme in place.”World-classJamie Dempsey, a lecturer in sports coaching at New College, Lanarkshire and head coach at BT Premiership club, Glasgow Hawks, said: I’m hugely excited about this challenge. This is a significant role in Scottish Rugby and it will be the cornerstone to producing world-class Scottish talent in the west.I want to try to build on the strong professional culture at Glasgow Warriors and replicate the core values in the Glasgow rugby community. I also want to see our players drive forward in the Academy at national level and create a rugby development programme that is not just equal to, but better than everything else on offer.To begin with my team and I will assess the strengths and the needs of the current good work that is going on nationwide and in Glasgow and the west and start to bring together a clear strategy that puts in place the goals of the wider Academies.I foresee the long-term success of this role being seen by an improvement in the quality of players that graduate into the pro-game and ultimately in the standings of our international age-grade teams.I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into it.As well as the new BT Sport Academy managers Scottish Rugby can reveal a series of fixtures that will be played between now and Christmas, which will play a major part in identifying recruits for the Academies.
