Australia and South Africa coming to BT Murrayfield

21 Jan 2021

Scotland will welcome Australia and current world champions South Africa to BT Murrayfield for the 2021 Autumn Internationals. A third, expected Tier 2 side, will be announced in due course to complete the three-match international series.

World Champions

It’s 10 years since Scotland last downed the world’s number one ranked side, the Springboks, on home soil, though there have been some closely-contested battles both home and away in the interim.

The last time Scotland played South Africa at BT Murrayfield was in 2018 when they narrowly lost to the team that would go onto to lift the Rugby World Cup in Japan the following year. A sensational length-of-the-pitch try from Peter Horne, and another from Hamish Watson, threatened a home win, but it wasn’t quite enough and the Scots were squeezed out 20-26, Handre Pollard scoring nine points for the visitors.

The Springbok’s last international was against England in the 2019 Rugby World Cup Final when they won the tournament for the third time, 12-32, in Yokohama. Take a look back at the final with highlights here.

Hat trick of victories

The previous year, Scotland ran in eight tries (of 12 scored in the match) in an astonishing 53-24 win over Australia, then the third ranked team in the world. A blistering second half performance, allied to an Australian red card, saw Scotland romp home with Byron McGuigan notching a brace on his first Test start.

Scotland will be aiming for a hat-trick of successive victories against the Wallabies, having won their last two encounters at BT Murrayfield and in Sydney, both in 2017.

Currently ranked sixth in the world, the Wallabies are coached by Dave Rennie, who formerly fulfilled the Head Coach role at Glasgow Warriors. Rennie is assisted by the former Scotland defence coach Matt Taylor.
