Heriot’s welcomed Boroughmuir to Goldenacre looking to make it four wins in four games and banish memories of a disappointing start to the season.

They didn’t waste much time getting on the board as some nice interplay saw them break from the halfway to score the first try of the match after only three minutes.

Boroughmuir were able to soak up Heriot’s pressure for much of the opening quarter before some more good handling put Charlie Simpson over in the corner to extend the home lead to 12 points.

A cagey second quarter remained scoreless as Boroughmuir turned over the ball on their own five metre line following a Heriot’s kick to the corner to bring a close to the half.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first, with Heriot’s scoring early on – a yellow card going to Boroughmuir in the process.

‘Muir replied quickly, however, with a score of their own before Heriot’s were shown a red while defending their line to reduce them to 14 men with nearly half an hour left on the clock.

Boroughmuir capitalised on the resulting scrums to narrow the gap to 19-12, but errors while fielding a clever Heriot’s chip saw the blue and whites scramble over the line to secure a try bonus point.

Another Heriot’s try would follow but Boroughmuir guaranteed they wouldn’t leave empty handed with two late tries gaining them as many bonus points.

The result takes Heriot’s to second in the table behind unbeaten Melrose – a position that will have seemed far-off earlier in the campaign after losing their opening matches.

Boroughmuir’s haul opens some breathing space on bottom placed Hawick ahead of their crunch match next weekend.

Elsewhere, in the first Ayrshire derby for nearly 40 years, a first half red card proved too much for Marr to overcome as neighbours, Ayr, turned the screw in the second half to win.

Melrose marched to their sixth win from six with when they visited Stirling County in yet another try-filled fixture.

Hawick remain winless after Watsonians overturned a half time deficit and Currie Chieftains stormed back from a 22 point difference to narrowly beat Glasgow Hawks.
