Contrasting fortunes for Scotland’s pro clubs
6 Oct 2014
Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby enjoyed differing fortunes on the road in the Guinness PRO12 at the weekend.Glasgow Warriors…Two tries from Scotland winger Tommy Seymour were the highlight for the Warriors who returned to the top of the PRO12 table with a resounding, six-try 40-23 win over Benetton Treviso in Italy.Seymour’s double and Tyrone Holmes’ score were the perfect response to Michele Campagnaro’s early try for the home side but Glasgow only led 19-16 at half-time.The visitors ran rampant in the second half however, as James Eddie, DTH van der Merwe and Sean Lamont all crossed for scores, meaning the Warriors have now won five from five.Edinburgh Rugby…Conversely, Edinburgh Rugby will look to this Saturday’s home clash with Dragons at BT Murrayfield to erase any memories of a humbling 30-0 defeat in Belfast to Ulster. After 13 minutes Ireland stand-off Paddy Jackson scored the first of his two penalties; five minutes later Edinburgh had the chance to level the score after Tonks was taken in the air though the distance was too much for Jack Cuthbert.Rejuvenated, Ulster dotted down for the try on the 25 minute mark, Andrew Trimble crossing as Tim Visser missed the tackle, Jackson adding the extras and a penalty to put the home side up 13-0 ahead at half time.Scrum infringements put paid to an opportunity to put points on the board further into the second half.A raft of replacements around the 60 minute mark gave fresh legs to the cause however a yellow card for captain Mike Coman paved the way for a second try, from Williams, followed by another five pointer from Rory Best, the result of a driving maul, with the extras added by Olding. The bonus point score completed the brace for Trimble, with Visser wrong-footed in the lead-up, and with one minute on the clock that tied up the game.
