Currie have secured the Scottish Rugby Youth League double, with both their under-16 and under-18 team’s winning their respective leagues.Currie Colts, the under-18 side, clinched their league at the weekend with a convincing 32-0 victory over GHA, despite missing their only Scotland representative and team captain Luke Crosbie. That result meant that the side won the league on points difference over Highland, after both clubs finished level on 52 points, with identical records of 13 wins and one defeat. An encouraging sign for the Colts is that nine of the players that featured in their final starting line-up of the season will still be at the club next season.Currie under-16’s had already won the Scottish Rugby Under 16 League for the first time, with Stirling County finishing in second place.Duncan Wilson, Currie under-16 coach, said: “I was lucky that I had a fantastic team full of some great young players and we won a few games convincingly. “But we had to really dig-in during our away game against Stirling. We got the win there and that result became vital in the outcome of the whole league.”I’ve always been a great believer in skills being key at a young age, the boys have to enjoy coming to training and learning.Currie have an academy in place at their club, providing players with a more professional set-up which makes the difficult transition from youth rugby to senior level more fluid.Selected players from both the under-16 and under-18 teams will take part in advanced training and strength and conditioning sessions with the hope that they will progress to feature for the first team.Wilson continued: “The end goal for all of us as coaches is to get as many of the players from our youth set-up as possible into our academy and eventually playing senior rugby.”
