The University of Glasgow today recognised three prominent personalities in Scottish Rugby by presenting the trio with honorary doctorates.Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend and former captain Alastair Kellock – who is now an ambassador for the pro-club and Scottish Rugby – both were made Doctors of the University in the ceremony at Bute Hall to mark Commemoration Day.They were among 22 honorary doctorates awarded from across a range of backgrounds including law, sport, science, business and charity.Gregor and Big Al were praised for their contribution to rugby and the manner in which Glasgow Warriors engage with the community.Lesley Thomson, the first woman to serve on Scottish Rugby’s Board, and Scotland’s former Solicitor General, was awarded Doctor of Laws.Not present at today’s ceremony but being recognised this summer is former Scotland No 8 and BBC broadcaster John Beattie who becomes a Doctor of the University, while, still with sport, Judy Murray, a hugely influential figure in British tennis, mum of both Andy and Jamie, and a member of Scottish Rugby’s Advisory Board, was similarly recognised.Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Anton Muscatelli, said: “It is a privilege and honour for the University to confer honorary degrees on such outstanding men and women.”From our part in the discovery of gravitational waves, which the world celebrated in February, to achievements in sport and charitable ventures, to name but a few, we can truly be proud of the inspiring people around us.”
