Current President George Jack (Leith) is standing for a second year and he is being challenged by Jim Stevenson (Cambuslang). Their election contest takes place during the Scottish Rugby Union agm on Friday 27 June. Two candidates are standing for the post of Premier 1 representative on the Council – incumbent George Clark (Boroughmuir) and former international lock Ian Barnes (Edinburgh Accies). That election meeting will take place on Tuesday 20 May. It’s a four-way race for the post of Premier 2 representative between Bernard Dunn (GHA), John Davidson (Jed-Forest), Bob Hogarth (Peebles) and Keith Wallace (Haddington). That election meeting takes place on Tuesday 13 May. In Premier 3 Donald Naysmith (Livingston) has been elected unopposed, while both National League representatives, Archie Ferguson (Dalziel) and Malcolm Gillies (Dumfries) have also been returned unopposed. At the agm clubs will consider four motions. The one certain to promote the most debate concerns domestic competitions in a congested calendar, while others focus on the timing of the agm; amendments to the SRU bye-laws; and an amendment to the SRU’s Articles of Association. The motion on competitions, from Scottish Rugby Board Chairman Allan Munro and SRU President George Jack, calls on the scheduling of stand-by dates for club games for the Sundays of home international weekends and also calls, as an interim measure, for National Cup competitions to be suspended for next season only. The ramifications of 12 team leagues and six international matches being played in Scotland next season mean that if there is a Cup competition next season some clubs could start the season on 16 August, play Cup matches on 27 December and 3 January and reach Cup Finals Day at Murrayfield on 9 May. The motion notes: It is recognised that for some the potential of an end of season finale at Murrayfield is highly valued. It is stressed that the potential for the retention of this feature will be given full consideration within any future proposals. George Jack added: In recent years there has been significant debate among clubs as to the shape of the competitive season and in proposing this motion I would emphasise that any decisions will be taken through a simple majority of member clubs at the agm. This is a matter for the clubs but, clearly, everyone wants to bring more cohesion to the season, and, where possible reduce fixture congestion and conflicts. Clubs can put forward amendments to the motions until Wednesday 21 May. Non-executive Board member, Brian Kennedy, the Scot who owns Sale Sharks, has intimated his intention to step down from the Board but to remain available to Scottish Rugby in an advisory capacity, if required. Allan Munro, Chairman of Scottish Rugby said: Brian has contributed greatly over the last three years and I thank him on behalf of my board for his excellent and valued support. I am delighted that Brian has offered to remain available to the board as an advisor if required.
