Friday 2 September: Boroughmuir Bears v Heriot’s Rugby

Round 5 of the 2022 FOSROC Super6 Championship got underway at Meggetland as Boroughmuir Bears hosted neighbours Heriot’s Rugby. After a first half of excellent attacking and defence from both sides, and a second half full of scoring, the hosts came out on top – beating Heriot’s Rugby 26-17.

After 14 mins of strong attacking from both sides, the Bears collected a penalty. A “black dot kick”* courtesy of Jack Bergin sliced right through the centre of the posts, putting the first points on the board.

Boroughmuir Bears couldn’t do anything to stop a fantastic drive from Heriot’s resulting in no. 2 Michael Liness diving over the line for the first try of the game. The ball is taken off to the left by the wind as Bruce Houston goes for the extras. 3-5

Just before half-time, Bears had the opportunity to claw back the lead. Jack Bergin uses his golden boot to gain a one point advantage over the visitors.

HALF-TIME: Boroughmuir Bears 6-5 Heriot’s Rugby

The second half began with long phases of strong defence from the visitors and strong attack from the hosts.

The score board got a long awaited change as Marcus Goodwin hit the ball down over the line right on the post protector, adding 5 more points for the Bears. Jack Bergin added another successful conversion to his ever-growing tally.

Another dominating drive brought the score up again for the Bears, with Josh King getting his hand at success. Jack Bergin was unstoppable as he cleared another conversion.

Heriot’s responded quickly and Callum Anderson added another 5 points to the board. Bruce Houston added the conversion.

The success for Heriot’s was short lived as they gave away a penalty to their hosts. Jack Bergin added another 3 points to the Bear’s score.

Nifty Elliot Young spotted a gap and burst through the Bears’ defence, grabbing 5 more points for Heriot’s. Conversion was way off course for Bruce Houston.

Another penalty kick for the Bears was successful thanks to Jack Bergin, taking away the chance of a try bonus point from Heriot’s.

Another final penalty was awarded to Boroughmuir in quick succession but was missed by Jack Bergin on the last minute.

* Describe by Chris Paterson – Where the ball is kicked right in the centre of the posts, directly in line with an imaginary ‘black dot’ in the centre of the crossbar.

Saturday 3 September: Watsonians v Stirling Wolves

The hosts opened the scoring with in the first five minutes of the game when hooker Cal Davies hung out at the back of the maul and dived over the line when the opportunity came, the score was neatly converted by Lee Miller.

Almost 10 minutes into the game Miller extend the hosts lead through a straight forward penalty infant of the posts, approximately 25metres out.

Two moments later, Watsonians openside flanker Campbell Wilson burst through the Wolves defence and ran in under the posts will Miller adding the extra two points on offer.

Just past the half-hour mark winger Lomond MacPherson gave everyone a masterclass in how to fend when he scored a try in the corner of which he had no right to do, Miller added the conversion.

Just before the half-time whistle, Miller threw an off load out the back door, it found scrum-half Murray Scott who pass out to Joe Reynolds on the wing who cantered in in, in between the posts.

Half-time: Watsonians 31-0 Stirling County

Three minutes into the first half Watsonians got on the scoreboard once more. Miller kept the try scoring opportunity alive thanks to a between the legs pass, there was then some excellent handling and running which allowed Angus Guthrie go dot down in the corner with Miller adding the two points.

Moments later Wolves scored their first points of the day when second-row Hamish Ferguson managed to force his way over in between the posts, Marcus Holden added the conversion.

The hosts scores two tries in quick succession just on and after the hour mark when Cole Lamberton powered over and then Ryan Daley who raced away down the far side with Miller adding both conversions on offer.

Watsonians went on to score their 8th and 9th tries when Jamie Berrisford finished off an excellent team try, Connor Eastgate charged down a Stirling kick. Miller converted both
