FOSROC SUPER6 SPRINT SERIES TEAM OF THE WEEK | ROUND 1

In round one all teams who played at home were victorious with Ayrshire Bulls winning over Boroughmuir Bears (24-17), Watsonians getting the better of Stirling County 26-24 and Heriot’s asserting their dominance over Southern Knights 41-24.

FRONT ROW
Securing the tight-head prop position is Scotland U20 cap Gregor Scougall who was pivotal at the scrum for Watsonians, fresh from a season in the Tennent’s Premiership with Currie Chieftains he’s found his form recently, looking dynamic and powerful in open play.

Although Lewis Skinner from Stirling County is also a tight-head, we couldn’t see past him for place in the team too as he moved about the park well and scored an important try for the visiting side.

Selected at hooker is Cal Davies (Watsonians) who was selected at the FOSROC Player of the Match by commentators Bruce Millar and Dale Clancy who said: “He’s been brilliant over the ball; he’s led from the front and got his try. He’s won umpteen penalties over the ball and looks like he can go on for another 80minutes.”

SECOND ROW

Chris Paterson selected Ayrshire Bulls Alex Samuel as his FOSROC Player of the Match during the Friday fixture and we couldn’t see past him either. Patterson said: “His work rate and effort in the tight, in the maul and the scrum has been outstanding.”

After sustaining an injury during the 2021 Under-20 Six Nations this was Samuel’s first game back for almost 10-months, he used his 6ft 9” frame to good use in the lineout and carried well.

Joining him in the boiler house is Stirling County’s Max Williamson, another young player who used his height well to contribute to County’s try count when he forced his way over the try line.

BACK-ROW
As ever, the back row is a competitive space. We’ve selected Watsonians blindside flanker Seb Cecil for his work-rate, physicality and dynamic ball carrying ability, he scored the host sides opening try of the game. This was an incredibly tight selection as Heriot’s Jack Mann was equally as impressive on the blindside of the scrum.

Although Mann wasn’t selected, his team-mate Iain Wilson gets the pick at openside flanker. Wilson, who has been a huge servant to the club over the years, was described as ‘elastic in the lineout’ and showed his athleticism throughout the game.

Boroughmuir Bears captain Craig Keddie is selected as the number 8. Another player who has been around a long time showed his experience and guided the young Bears team around him throughout the evening at Millbrae, he also scored an important try for the visitors just after the stroke of half-time.

HALF-BACKS
Although he came on as a replacement for the Goldenacre side, scrum-half Jed Gelderbloom provided slick and sharp service to his stand-off Bruce Houston and just pips Cam Jones (Ayrshire Bulls) for selection who scored a nice try on Friday evening.

Although Houston has a successful day from the boot on Saturday, Jason Baggott gets the nod as he controlled the game well and slotted a late penalty under-pressure for Watsonians to win the game.

CENTRE

Inside centre Robbie McCallum (Boroughmuir Bears) intercepted the ball in his own half against the Bulls on Friday evening and ran in an important try for the Bears to ensure a they took a losing bonus point back to Edinburgh.

As some would say, 13 is the hardest position to play on the pitch but Ayrshire Bulls Thomas Glendinning tracked back and defended well all evening in his first outing at FOSROC Super6 level.

BACK-THREE

We can’t look past Bulls replacement winger Aaron Tait who scored two tries in the space of 10minutes, the first try showing his turn of pace and the second showing his ability to finish in the corner.

Knights Paddy Anderson is selected on the other wing, he scored a lovely try when he collected a neat grubber kick by his inside centre Cammy Scott. Aside from that, he’s a winger who goes about his business unassumingly and quietly but always reliable in what he does

To round off the team selections Stirling County’s Marcus Holden gets the nod at full-back. He captained and guided the team well from the back and slotted a penalty and conversion when it mattered to keep them in the game.
