Get ready for the 1872 Cup

16 May 2022

Edinburgh Rugby host Glasgow Warriors at BT Murrayfield in a must-see 1872 Cup decider this Saturday (21 May, kick-off 6.30pm).

All roads lead to BT Murrayfield for one of the most highly anticipated 1872 Cup derbies in the professional era, as the two sides go head-to-head for much more than intercity bragging rights on the final day of the regular URC season.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the latest instalment of world rugby’s oldest intercity derby.

What’s at stake?

A lot.

The 1872 Cup – The second and deciding leg of the intercity derby will determine who claims the trophy. The Warriors lead 30-17 on aggregate and will retain the cup if Edinburgh do not win by a margin of 14 points, or if the aggregate scores are level (as holders Glasgow would retain the trophy).

Scottish x Italian Shield and Champions Cup qualification – This is a true ‘winner takes all’ clash as the victor will top the Scottish x Italian Shield and thus secure automatic Champions Cup Qualification. Whoever loses will finish in eight place – qualifying them into the Challenge Cup in 2022/23.

Quarter-Final seeding – Both sides have already qualified for the URC Playoffs however the loser of this intercity decider will finish in eighth place and thus face an away Quarter-Final to table-toppers Leinster on w/o 4 June. Victory for either side could see them move up to sixth place where they’ll face an away trip to either Ireland or South Africa.

The story so far…

The evenly matched sides exited Europe at the quarter-final stage and go into the final round of URC action level on 50 points with URC Play-off rugby secure.

The Warriors are in seventh place and Edinburgh are sitting one place behind in eighth, with Glasgow ahead on ‘matches won.’

The Quarter-Finals of the competition take place on w/o 4 June with the 1872 Cup result set to determine where both sides finish in the table, and thus the final seeding of the last eight.
