Hawick host Heriot’s in final round of Tennent’s Premiership fixtures

1 Mar 2019

The final round of Tennent’s Premiership fixtures takes place this weekend with Hawick hosting Heriot’s at Mansfield Park.

With the top four play-off places now confirmed – Ayr, Heriot’s, Melrose and Currie Chieftains – the only thing to be decided is second place, which determines who will have a home play-off fixture.

Second-placed Currie Chieftains are currently the front-runners for the home play-off tie at Malleny Park and they will be looking cement this with a win over Edinburgh Accies.

However, there could still be a few twists and turns, with only two points the difference between Currie, Heriot’s, who occupy third position and Melrose, who are in fourth place.

At the other end of the table, things are still tight between the bottom three teams, with six points separating Edinburgh Academicals, Hawick and Glasgow Hawks.

Hawick Head Coach George Graham commented, “Heriot’s will undoubtedly pose a massive challenge to us. They are consistently the in-form team. More importantly they have done this all season without a single pro player.

“Their set piece and fast tempo will require us to be keyed in for 80 minutes if we want to get anything from the game. It’s the last league game of the season so we want to finish on a high.”

Visiting coach Phil Smith is under no illusions of the challenge his team will face in the Borders, “A pivotal weekend in the league as we will finally find out the make-up of the top 4 placings. We will endeavour to put as much pressure on second-placed Currie as possible by going all out for the win at Mansfield.

“Therefore, we have planned for an 80-minute battle, that may well go down to the last kick of the ball.”
