Nel named as part of Watsonians Super6 coaching set-up

Watsonians have revealed their back-room staff ahead of the new Super6 season, which includes Scotland tighthead, WP Nel.

The Super6 coaching set-up is headed up by Head Coach Fergus Pringle and he will be assisted by Nikki Walker.

The Super6 squad will also be working with Skills/Specialist Coach Richard Snedden – the former scrum-half who was part of the club’s coaching set-up last year – and Specialist Coach, Nel, who has earned 29 Scotland caps.

Edinburgh Rugby and Scotland tighthead prop Nel needs little introduction, he is known as one of the best scrummagers in the world and the front-row players in the Super6 squad will benefit from his experience.

The club also took the opportunity to discuss their decision to retain their traditional name, while Southern Knight’s (Melrose), Ayrshire Bulls (Ayr) and Boroughmuir Bears (Boroughmuir) have all announced their rebrands prior to the season.

In a statement the club said, “In terms of the Super6 team name, ‘Watsonians Rugby’, the Super6 Board felt very strongly that it is important to maintain the traditional links the history of the club that has been on the go since 1875.

“The strip design reflects this as we retain the traditional maroon and white hoops, with just a slight twist! We have used additional colours that appear in the WFC crest although the team will be adopting a slightly more modern badge to reflect the name change.

“Those who played for the club in the 90’s will be familiar with our new away jersey.”

Off the field, former Scotland centre Euan Kennedy has become president and heads up the committee for 2019/20.

There are 12 other members on the general committee from all sections of the club while there is also now a Super6 board they enter an exciting new era.

It is headed up by Chairman John Reid and we are all looking forward to a great season at Myreside.

These are exciting times at Myreside for both our men’s and women’s players and Director of Rugby Chris Hunter continues in that role to oversee all on field matters.
