Newton Stewart scoop BT Club of the Month

20 Dec 2017

Unbeaten Newton Stewart have been named BT Club of the Month for their strong club culture and rugby development in a traditional football heartland.

An emphasis on a ‘one club’ approach has seen the side grow to become a central part of the local community.

The team encourage players of all ages to take ownership of the club and drive it forward wherever possible to breed team spirit and boost morale.

They now sit second in BT National 3 following a month of wins for their first XV, showing they are a force to be reckoned with after promotion last year.

Newton Stewart President, Jamie Hyslop, said: “Newton Stewart are a true community club and we are lucky to have a fantastic band of volunteers who help the club at every opportunity.

“On match-days there is a fantastic mix of people, from all backgrounds and all ages, brought together by the common bond of rugby.

“It’s fantastic to win BT Club of the Month and it’s a great indication of where the club is heading and the work everyone puts in.”

A partnership with neighbouring team, Wigtownshire, has strengthened both clubs and brought the communities closer together as they provide more playing opportunities for everyone playing with them.

Newton Stewart offer all rugby up to U16 level at no cost and have recently established a thriving micros section, which joins the mini, midi and age-grade teams in offering kids the chance to play no matter where they are in their rugby careers.

As a result, the route players can take through the club is well established and the average age of first XV is now made up primarily of players who have come through their set-up.

The club have also made strides in providing opportunities for girls to play by supporting nearby Douglas Ewart High School.

This commitment to working with the community also reaches out to local primary schools where their Development Officer, Jamie Muir, who has been with the club for eight years, takes regular sessions, introducing children to rugby in a fun atmosphere.

The BT Club of the Month award celebrates on-pitch performance, discipline and rugby development.

To win, a club does not have to be the best in all three areas, but should show a successful balance, with potential for long-term growth

Newton Stewart will receive £200 plus a 12 month commercial BT Sport subscription for their clubhouse.

Winning clubs will also be nominated for BT Club of the Season at the annual Club Awards Dinner at BT Murrayfield.
