One win and one loss for Scotland 7s on second day in Australia

Scotland 7s made it to the Bowl semi-final today in the Gold Coast 7s following a victory over USA, 19-10, and then a defeat at the hands of Canada, 14-19.Ultimately, the results in this year’s first leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series were an improvement from this time last year where the side won the lowest tiered Shield trophy. Struan Dewar scored the first Scottish try of the day v USA and Joseva Nayacavou marked his first cap for Scotland 7s with a try in the Canada match. These were bolstered with a brace from Alex Glashan in the quarter-final and a single chip and chase try by Andrew Turnbull v Canada. The Canada match, was a close fought affair with Scotland leading 14-12 with moments left on the clock, but a second try from Harry Jones, late on in the game, was enough to knock the Scots out the competition. Glashan struck four conversions from five. Scotland 7s head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: “I’m hugely frustrated, we made too many individual errors, missed too many tackles and asked Canada to beat us.”We need to be up for every game at this level and we have to get better as a team rather than ask our opposition to beat us. We’ve finished 11th, but for this group of players that’s not good enough.”A lot of what went wrong out there was in our control. We have to work hard for our scores, but when our opponents get ball, they score easily. We have to become more difficult to break down. “The only way to fix this is keep working hard on the training field. We move forward to Dubai now, but the frustrating things is we have given away important Series points and there’s now only eight tournaments left.” Michael Fedo had no involvement in day two having sustained an injury the first day. Similarly Struan Dewar and James Fleming missed out on the Canada match for the same reason.
