Preview: FOSROC Super6 Final: Watsonians v Ayrshire Bulls

Watsonians finished top of the table after the regular season by just two points, securing nine wins from their 10 games. A 31-12 win against Heriot’s Rugby at Myreside in the semi-final guaranteed the Edinburgh outfit a trip to Edinburgh Rugby’s home.

Ayrshire Bulls finished in second, also securing nine wins. They beat Boroughmuir Bears 17-0 at Meggetland to secure their spot in the final.

Fergus Pringle (Watsonians) said:

There are two changes to the backs. Angus Guthrie returns from injury to start on the wing in place of Ross McKnight who drops out of the squad. Rory Brand starts in place of Murray Scott who moves to the bench.

In the forwards, there is 1 change to the starting pack with Kwagga Van Niekerk starting at 6. Luis Ball moves from 6 to the second row and Kieran Watt moves to the bench. On the bench, Neil Irvine-Hess returns to the squad in place of Michael Badenhorst.

It’s exciting for us as a group of players and staff, and the wider club at Watsonians to be involved in the 2022 FOSROC Super 6 Championship final. A lot of hard work and commitment has gone into getting to this point, but we’re also very aware that the job isn’t done yet.

Ayr are a formidable opponent, and have been the form team in the latter rounds of the Championship.  They have a strong set piece, very good defence and contestable kicking game while also having dangerous players that can capitalise on any turnover transition opportunities.

Our focus this week is on ourselves and our plans and processes that we need to deliver on to put in a performance we can be proud of. High pressure games require discipline and accuracy under pressure. If we can execute the basics well individually and collectively for the full 80minutes, we’ll give ourselves a chance of coming out on top.

It’s a settled look to the starting line-up with only one change with Ed Bloodworth returning from injury. This means Gavin Wilson drops to the bench with Ewan Hamilton-Bulger misses out. The only other change sees Thomas Glendinning coming in for Jamie Shedden.

What a great way to end the season with the final at DAM Health Stadium against Watsonians. The league games against the same opposition was a very good contest with us sharing the spoils one a piece. The players have worked hard in training to improve a few key areas going into this game It has take a whole club effort including a few intense training sessions against our club XV. We know the challenge that Watsonians will pose and we will have to be on the top of our game to retain our title, with numerous buses making the trip from Millbrae to Murrayfield we want to do our supporters and ourselves proud.
