Preview: Scotland Women v Japan Women

24 Nov 2019

Scotland Women are hosting Japan today at Scotstoun (KO 1pm – watch live at www.scottishrugby.org). Even though it is the sides first time meeting, the relationship between the two Unions is incredibly strong.

Scotland’s kit today features the Scottish Rugby tartan as well as the Nagasaki tartan following the relationship that Scottish Rugby has with the Nagasaki region of Japan. A region that kindly hosted the Scotland Men’s team prior to the recent Rugby World Cup.

SEASON RESULTS

Scotland started their season off strong with a double victory over South Africa in their first ever tour as a squad and their first matches in the Southern Hemisphere.

The tour gave the team some invaluable time together during training and match day situations.

Last weekend the winning streak was halted by a strong Welsh team. The visitors beat Scotland 3-17 in a physical match at Scotstoun.

Japan have shown that they are stronger than their rankings suggest with a 17-17 draw against a strong side from Italy last weekend.

SCOTLAND SQUAD

Both Jade Konkel and Emma Wassell will earn their 40th caps today and two players will be hoping to earn their first cap for Scotland.

Doyle said on the selection: “We’ve suffered a few injuries since last week so have brought in a couple of players to the squad. Anne Young came to South Africa with us, so it’s a good opportunity to bring her back into the squad.

“Issy Drexler is new to the squad and I’m keen to see how she works alongside some of her Watsonians teammates if she makes it onto the field this weekend.”

JAPAN SQUAD

Scotland have only faced Japan before when they were invited to play in the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Marcoussis in the summer.

Chloe Rollie commented on the side in a recent Scottish Rugby Podcast saying: “They are very fast. The sevens were always on the go, you never had a second to take a breath and reset.
