Q&A with Scotland Captain Rachel Malcolm

7 Feb 2020

With Scotland's first home match of the Women's Six Nations taking place on Sunday at Scotstoun, we spoke to captain Rachel Malcolm to find out more about her.

How did you start your rugby journey?

Originally I played hockey until I was 24, then I tried touch rugby with some friends and fell in love with it. I initially played for Lichfield Ladies and have been with Loughborough Lightning for the past three seasons.

How did a Scotland call-up come about?

At the end of my first season our Head Coach contacted Shade Munro and said he had a couple of Scots (Sarah Bonar as well) who were worth having a look at, so it went from there. We were so nervous and got there embarrassingly early but it went really well!

It’s very special because rugby is an important sport in my family. I’d never played full senior hockey for Scotland so to do it in rugby was such an honour.

What was it like to captain Scotland for the first time?

I was in my second season with the squad when I was asked to be captain for the first time. To think the team and coaches saw me in that light was a huge privilege, and in front of my family was just incredible; a real career highlight.

How do you juggle your job as a lecturer with playing?

There are a lot of days when you feel tired but it’s not a struggle because as soon as you come into camp, the buzz around the place gives you energy. I’ve also got extremely understanding employers who make my life really easy in that respect.

What is your ideal cheat meal?

We were just talking about this recently! I think it would have to be pizza for me!

What music is played pre-game in the changing room at the moment?

We usually build with Scottish tunes – stuff like Sharon Martin, then we build it to more upbeat numbers – for me I’d go for Chase & Status
