Scotland 7s and Team GB Olympic silver medalist Mark Robertson has announced that the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series tournament in London this weekend will be his last. The Twickenham tournament will be Robertson’s 57th on the World Series, the highlight of which undoubtedly came in the Cup Final victory over South Africa at the same stadium in 2016.Son of 44-times capped Scotland internationalist Keith Robertson, Mark has scored over 100 tries on the World Series as well as enjoying stints with the Border Reivers, Edinburgh Rugby and Scotland A.Robertson boasts a Rugby 7s World Cup and a Commonwealth Games on his CV and in 2016 a fine season was rewarded with a place in the Team GB 7s squad at the Rio Olympics. The Silver Medalist has a Masters of Sports Science from Edinburgh University and released a statement announcing the conclusion of his rugby playing career. He said: “Calling time on that career is the single hardest decision I’ve ever had to make. I am incredibly proud to have represented Scotland on the World Sevens Series over the past decade and to have played my part in helping develop a strong national sevens programme.”I’ve been lucky enough to experience many unforgettable moments throughout my career but the highlights for me include reaching the final in my first Melrose 7s, winning the final leg of the World Series at Twickenham and representing Team GB in Rio 2016.”Even though my days on the pitch will soon be over, rugby will always be a big part of me and I’m excited to see where the game might take me in the future. “It has given me so much – both on and off the field – and I’m looking forward to sharing this knowledge and experience with others who share my love of this fantastic sport.”
