Scotland defence resolute in polished victory
2 Dec 2013
Scotland Women 28 Irish Exiles 0Scotland Women rounded off a two day training camp with an emphatic victory, scoring 28 unanswered points against Irish Exiles. The defensive effort from Scotland proved to be the separating factor on the day, with Ireland struggling to cope with the well-structured and physical defence of the women in blue.Scotland coach, Jules Maxton, said: “We’re very pleased we managed to hold a zero scoreline, testament to the work we’ve been doing with the girls in our skills clinic.”This [defence] is something we’ll look to continue to improve on and make a formidable part of our game, the blue wall as we like to call it.”The home team also managed to score three tries from Steph Johnson, Sarah Smith and Tess Forsberg, compliment to their flair and ingenuity in attack.Maxton said: “We were very creative with all the tries coming from turnover ball, the girls showing quick reactions to get the scores.”Two of the tries were converted with a further three penalties added to the tally, taking the final score to 28-0.The performance bodes well for the future, showing a depth in the squad building towards the Six Nations campaign early next year.Scotland full-back, Steph Johnson (pictured above), said:”Today will have caused a massive headache over selection as lots of girls really stepped up to the plate, put their marker down and want that shirt.”Everybody has really picked it up, because now it definitely is a competition for Six Nations shirts.”Video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uI0TBErPPYScotland squad from:Forwards: Suzanne McKerlie-Hex, Nikki McLeod, Tracy Balmer, Samantha Beal, Deborah McCormack, Ruth Slaven, Tess Forsberg, Lindsay Wheeler, Heather Lockhart, Lindsey Smith, Sarah Quick, Emma Wassell, Lana Skeldon and Anna Stodter.Backs: Sarah Law, Lisa Martin, Megan Gaffney, Gillian Inglis, Annabel Sergeant, Katy Green, Stephanie Johnston, Louise Dalgliesh, Tanya Griffith, Laura Steven, Sarah Smith and Jenny Maxwell.
