Scotland duo honoured to represent the Barbarians

20 Nov 2019

Two Scots have been called up to represent the Barbarian Women’s team when they face Wales at the Principality Stadium on Saturday 30th November.

Annabel Sergeant, who picked up her 26th cap on the sides’ recent tour to South Africa, has been selected to be part of the star-studded team in their third international fixture. Sergeant has also been capped seven times for Scotland Women 7s.

Lauren Harris, who was capped 29 times for Scotland between 2011 and 2018 and won six caps for 7s has been encouraged out of retirement to play in the Barbarians match against Wales.

Harris and Sergeant are the latest names to join an all-star squad including three Black Ferns, two Cherry Blossoms, and one of Ireland’s most capped players.

Sergeant said on the call up: “I’m so honoured and excited to be playing for the Barbarians. I can’t wait to play alongside some talented players from around the world as well as some of my close friends from New Zealand that I haven’t seen since I left!

“I’m eager to go and soak up as much as possible and learn from such inspiring players and coaches. What an incredible opportunity to play for such a prestigious team at such an amazing venue.”

The historic match against Wales is a first for the Barbarians women’s side and is only the second-ever double header after the men’s and women’s teams faced England in June.

The pair follow Helen Nelson who played for the Barbarians Women’s team in their first international fixture against the USA Women’s Eagles.

“I am delighted to be asked to play for Barbarian FC. It is such an honour and will be a fitting end to my rugby career”
Lauren Harris

Scott Forrest, Scottish Rugby Women’s High Performance Manager, said on the selection: “I am delighted that both Annabel and Lauren have been called up into the Barbarians squad.

“For Annabel, it is a great opportunity for her to play alongside players from all across the world and learn from them.

“It nice for Lauren Harris to come back for one last match and what a way to finish her career, playing for the Barbarians at the Principality Stadium!”
