Scotland 7s were knocked out of the Vancouver 7s by the hosts after a mixed weekend of results in Canada.
Drawn against England, Argentina and Japan in Pool D, John Dalziel’s fell to defeat in game one against the auld enemy, Max McFarland scoring Scotland’s only try in a 21-7 defeat.
Alec Coombes’ brace of tries against Argentina in game two weren’t enough to secure his side victory, the Puma’s running away 31-14.
However, Scotland found their rhythm against Japan to conclude day one. Co-captain Jamie Farndale crossing the line three times with Harvey Elms and Ross McCann also scoring as the Scots comfortably won 29-7.
Drawn against Chile in the Challenge Trophy Quarter Finals, Farndale scored his second hat-trick in two matches as Scotland won 25-5. Elms and Robbie Fergusson also crossing.
The Scots flew out of the blocks against the hosts in the Semi-Finals in front of a packed-out BC Place, Nyle Godsmark and Glenn Bryce tries helping them race into an early lead.
But the Canadians hit back to even things up before snatching victory in the final play of the game, denying Scotland the opportunity to defend their Trophy title in the Final.
Scotland 7s Head Coach John Dalziel said: “The boys are a bit battered and bruised. Alec Coombes had a head collision, Scott Riddell didn’t play day two with a Hamstring injury and Robbie Fergusson injured his elbow.
“We got off to a great start against Canada going 14-0 up and should have controlled the game much better after such a clean and accurate start.
“Through ill-discipline and unforced errors, we really put ourselves under pressure.
“There was lots of endeavour, but we were not accurate enough this weekend. We will take the learnings and bounce back. Key series points over both weekends keeps us in 9th place overall on the World Series.”
