Scotland Women 7s reach Prague final

Scotland Women 7s enjoyed an undefeated run up to the Rugby Europe Women’s Sevens Trophy final, but were overcome by a strong Sweden side.Tries from Lauren Harris, Chloe Rollie and Abi Evans kept Scotland in the match but Sweden, seeded second after the Scots, took control of the game and won 34-15.Head Coach Graham Shiel said: “Unfortunately the tables were turned in our last game. It was noticeable that Sweden had more fire power and they took control of the game to lead 10-19 at half time. In the second half we tried to apply pressure but they were a better team at the end of the day.Prague has given us a marker on where we are compared to other nations and has also highlighted what we need to work on so we can be at our best in a fortnight.”Scotland, which featured seven new caps, opened the weekend in Prague with a 33-10 win over Israel. Next up were the hosts who made it tough for the Scots, but with increased pressure came errors and the guests earned a 19-0 victory.The Scots saved their best performance till last and ran away with a 47-7 win over Switzerland.At the end of day one, Scotland topped Pool A after scoring 99 points in three games through 15 tries and 12 conversions while only conceding 17 points. Seven players crossed the whitewash, including Kirsty McConnell and Abi Evans who scored their first tries for Scotland. Lisa Martin was top points scorer with 27 through a try and 11 out of 13 conversions.Scotland kicked off the second day with another win over Czech to progress to the semi-finals where they met Germany. The Scots put on a very good performance to see off a competitive team to secure their berth in the final against Sweden.Six players scored tries on day two, with Chloe Rollie claiming top try scorer for the second-day running with four scores.Scotland Women 7s will next compete in the second leg of the Rugby Europe Women’s Sevens Trophy on July 9-10.Image: Czech Rugby Union
