Scotland Women Add To World Cup Legacy

Members of the Scotland Women squad took up the challenge off the pitch today (25 August) as they joined in the fun and games at a play centre for disabled youngsters near their base in Surrey.One of several legacy events planned for post-match days during the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup, flanker Ruth Slaven and stand off, Tanya Griffith, visited Disability Challengers in Guildford which has benefited from the support of rugby’s Wooden Spoon charity.Being tackled, fairly impressively, by a seven-year-old in a superhero t-shirt wasn’t, perhaps, what Ruth had envisaged on the rest day after facing France but both girls were delighted to come along to see the great work being done by the charity – and join in some not-so-soft play! Said Ruth: “We’re in a privileged position – not many people get the chance to spend the afternoon with such amazing children. It was great fun and the kids seemed to love it. The highlight of my afternoon, though, definitely has to be getting tackled by Superman!”Fresh from her unusual training session, Tanya added: “Seeing the faces of kids who don’t have full mobility, being able to play safely in a place like this is great.”With its origins on the rugby field, Wooden Spoon continues to support a range of projects to improve life for disadvantaged children and young people throughout the UK and Ireland by raising money at social and sporting events. Disability Challengers is one of these projects, providing fun activities to disabled children and young people and giving their families breaks during high pressure times, such as school holidays.Scotland Women meet Sweden in their third pool game of the 2010 Rugby World Cup on Saturday 28 August at Surrey Sports Park, near Guildford (kick-off 12noon).
