Scottish Futures U18 7s squad prepare for Home Nations

12 Aug 2019

The Scottish Futures U18 7s squad are in full preparation mode for the U18 Home Nations Championship in Wales later this month.

The squad was selected following a nominations process which saw players from across the country come to a Talent ID Day. A further selection day was then held due to the unprecedented number of players.

From the 60 players that attended, a group of 18 players have been selected. They have been training throughout the summer ahead of two upcoming opportunities to play for Scotland U18 7s.

Robert Lavery, Scottish Rugby’s Performance Pathway Manager Girls and Women’s Rugby, said, “The interest that we had for the Talent ID Day was fantastic. We had players come from all across the country and our Head Coach Graeme Blackhall had a tough job in narrowing it down.

“The Squad have been training really well together and I am excited to see how they develop as a group over the next month.

“We have two great opportunities ahead of us with the U18 7s Home Nations and the Rugby Europe 7s U18 Girls Championship”.

The squad will be used to form the teams for both the U18 7s Home Nations in Wales on August 17 as well as the sides first invite to the Rugby Europe 7s U18 Girls Championship at the end of August.

The squad includes seven players who played in the 2018 Home Nations. Three of these players have also received caps for the Scotland Women 7s squad.

Sarah Denholm played for Scotland Women in the first leg of the Rugby Europe Grand Prix Series in Marcoussis. Evie Wills received a senior cap in the 2018 Grand Prix Series in Kazan.

Meryl Smith played in both the second leg of the Rugby Europe Grand Prix Series in Kharkiv as well as Scotland’s debut in the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series in Biarritz.
