Scottish Rugby supports Sleep in the Park

3 Dec 2018

Scottish Rugby is once again supporting a campaign which seeks to eradicate homelessness in Scotland.

This year, Social Bite’s Sleep in the Park, has grown from one event in Edinburgh, to four events with Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow, joining the capital and all will go ahead this Saturday (8 December).

Scottish Rugby’s ambassador, Alastair Kellock, has undertaken the sleep-out before, along with Edinburgh Fosroc Scottish Rugby Academy manager, Graeme Beveridge; and coach development officer, Gordon Lyon.

This year, Scotland Women international prop Lindsey Smith, will be joined by her fellow caps Jenny Johnston and Sarah Smith, four players from Hillhead Jordanhill, Hannah McHugh, Amanda Moore, Francesca Wood and Daniel Baxter and, from Greenock Wanderers, Lauren Gunn.

They will sleep out in Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow.

Lindsey, who is Community Manager at Glasgow Warriors, said: “I did the sleep out last year with some of my Scotland team-mates and I’ve decided to give it a go again this year.

“By doing this you get an insight into the struggles that homeless people endure on a daily basis.

“The target across the four cities is for 12,000 people to sleep under the stars to raise a substantial amount of money to help to combat homelessness. As a country it seems right that we should aim for everyone to have a bed and a roof over their head.”

In Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, Fosroc Scottish Rugby Edinburgh Academy physio Gavin Dempsey will be joined by four players, props Dan Winning and Shaun Gunn, scrum-half Robbie Davis and stand-off George Goodenough for the sleep-out.
