Second weekend of Sarah Beaney Cup action

The two sides will meet under lights at Beveridge Park this evening in Pool 6 with the home side looking to bounce back after an opening defeat to Watsonians five days ago and the visitors playing their first ever competitive fixture.

Kirkcaldy skipper Louise Heggie said:“It was a tough defeat against Watsonians, but it was a positive run out for the team as we haven’t played since last year, was good to dust of the cobwebs.

“There is a great buzz about the ‘Friday night lights’ game, it will be a great atmosphere to play in.

“The team is building in strength, we lost a lot of players recently, but with a high focus on recruitment numbers at training are picking up and there is a good vibe among the girls working with head coach Dave McKervail.”

Back-row Heggie has played for the club for nine years now and knows they will have to be at their best to defeat Liberton

“We are expecting a good competitive fun match, we are looking forward to the team getting into full swing and playing some good rugby,” she stated.

Liberton make the trip from Edinburgh to Fife very excited.

The group of girls have been working hard under the watchful eye of head coach Craig Young to get to this stage and, having been involved in friendlies, they are now ready for competitive rugby.

“We have really enjoyed learning all about the game over the last while and we have all put in a lot of effort to get to this stage,” captain Leanne Omar said.

“We know that Kirkcaldy are an established club and they will be well-drilled, but we are determined to go out there and put in a good 80 minutes and see where it gets us.

“To be name captain of the team is a big thing for myself personally and it is great to have the support of the girls around me as this Liberton team continues to grow.”

In this year’s competition there are 11 pools and the final standings of each pool will determine whether clubs are entered into the top tier Cup, the second tier Plate or the third tier Bowl, with the draw for those competitions being made in a few weeks time.

Following the Kirkcaldy-Liberton clash this evening there is one game on Saturday and 10 on Sunday.

On Saturday morning in Pool 9 Howe Harlequins enter the competition with a home game against Stornoway in Cupar.

On Sunday Pool 1 sees Wigtownshire enter the competition with an away game at Biggar while Oban Lorne host West of Scotland in Pool 2 with the former having put up a good fight in defeat to Cartha five days ago.

Stewartry gave Hillhead/Jordanhill a fright in Pool 3 last weekend and they are at home to Hamilton with Stirling County – who have a number of players involved in the national squad against Wales tonight – welcome Orkney Dragons to Bridgehaugh.

Pool 5 will get underway when Grangemouth host Livingston while in Pool 8 Kelso, who lost to Heriot’s in Edinburgh last Sunday, welcome RDVC to Poynder Park.

Pool 10 sees Annan v Ardrossan Accies and Greenock Wanderers v Glasgow University with Shetland v Huntly and Peterhead v Garioch in Pool 11 rounding off a busy few days.

There are no Pool 7 games this weekend.
