Southern Knights reveal details of Doddie Weir foundation fundraising match

21 Dec 2022

Southern Knights and Newcastle Falcons will play each other in 2023 to raise funds for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation.

The Greenyards based FOSROC Super6 outfit will play the Falcons across two fixtures, home and away on 4 and 11 February respectively.

Doddie, the former Melrose, Newcastle, Scotland and British & Irish Lions lock, passed away last month aged 52 after a long fight against MND – motor neurone disease – and having raised millions of pounds through his foundation to support research to find a cure for MND.

Jill Douglas, Foundation chief executive, said: “What a fitting way to raise money for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

“Doddie loved his time at Melrose and Newcastle, and these two games will give both sets of supporters a chance to get together, watch some fantastic rugby and remember him”.

Scott Wight, Southern Knights Assistant coach, said: “It’s been fantastic to re-establish this fixture and offer our support in continuing Doddie’s work by raising funds to aid the foundation in their research to find a cure for MND. He has such a strong connection with the Greenyards, the Borders region and Newcastle and from a rugby perspective, fixtures like this don’t come much bigger.”

There will be a pre-match lunch at the Greenyards on February 4 from 11.45am onwards and will include a two-course meal, tea and coffee at half time, a pre-match auction and a players Q&A. The hospitality ticket will also include the match day ticket which is available to purchase below.

For every ticket / hospitality place sold, £5 will also be donated to the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation which invests in research to find meaningful treatments for MND.

The 1877 and Ned Haig bar will also be showing the England v Scotland Guinness Six Nations fixture which is a 4.45pm kick-off.
