Tennent’s Premiership Round-Up: 7/8 September

Selkirk are top of the fledgling table after week one after they defeated Glasgow Hawks 50-15 at Philiphaugh on Saturday.

A converted try from Luke Pettie gave the home side the lead early on in the Borders and when Fraser Anderson and Luca Berte followed him over the try line they were well in control.

James Bett’s try made it 24-0 and gave them a bonus point before the interval before a converted effort by Craig Shields got Hawks on the scoreboard.

A Liam Brims penalty soon after the interval made it 24-10, but then Selkirk found another gear again.

Pettie again, Ryan Cottrell, Aaron McColm and Jacob Henry scored further tries for the home side with McColm kicking three more conversions.

Paul Cairncross scored a consolation try for Hawks.

Hawick are second in the table after a bonus point win of their own at Musselburgh.

At Stoneyhill, Hawick got off to a flying start in this game.

They scored the first try of the day after just five minutes when Craig Bachurzewski made it over with Ali Weir converting.

Three minutes later Musselburgh must have been fearing the worst when Logan Gordon-Woolley sprinted down the left for Hawick’s second try to make it 12-0.

Musselburgh were no pushovers though and when they scored a seven point penalty try and then Hawick’s Daniel Suddon was yellow carded it was game on again.

Musselburgh skipper Maltman and Hawick’s Bruce Bruce McNeil were also sent to the sin bin, before Danny Owenson’s converted try put the hosts 14-12 up.

Hawick scored three tries before the interval through Bachurzewski, captain Shawn Muir and Gordon-Woolley to make it 29-14.

Musselburgh were not done though and scored a converted try in the 43^rd minute by Tom Foley.

Hawick knew they had to up the ante at that stage to make sure of the opening day victory and Bailey Donaldson, Stuart Graham and Andrew Mitchell all went over to finish things off at 50-21.

Marr too scored a number of points on the road to triumph 57-28 at Jed-Forest.

The visitors took the lead through a Colin Sturgeon penalty, but then Jed hit them with three converted tries.

Callum Young, Robbie Yourston and Rory Marshall were the men going over. Marr captain Conor Bickerstaff and Young traded converted tries to leave thing at 28-10 at the interval.

Marr then clicked in the second half and ran in tries for fun including three for Bickerstaff to take hm to four for the match, Scott Bickerstaff, Jack Preston, Ioseso Uraga and Sturgeon. The latter also kicked six conversions.

The two other bonus point winners on Saturday were Currie Chieftains and Aberdeen Grammar.

The Chieftains led 33-0 at the break against GHA at Braidholm, Charlie Brett, Matias Argiro, captain Fergus Scott, Steven Hamilton and Rhys Davies crossing for tries with Gregor Hunter converting four of them.

Ruairi O’Keefe and Andrew Gilman crossed for converted GHA tries in the second 40 minutes with Scott adding a second for Currie to finish things at 38-14.

Aberdeen Grammar defeated Edinburgh Accies 30-17 at Rubislaw.

Nathan Brown led the way with two tries for the men from the Granite City with Robin Cessford and Nat Coe their other scorers and Tom Aplin kicking 10 points.

James Gordon and Patrick O’Sullivan crossed for Accies for whom Jamie Loomes kicked seven points.

Fast forward 24 hours to Sunday and it was the turn of the women to put on a show.

Hillhead/Jordanhill and Watsonians both remained unbeaten after three rounds of fixtures in the top flight.

Hills were on the road to ever-improving Cartha Queens Park and the visitors came out on top 46-10 at Dumbreck to top the table.

Scotland cap Megan Gaffney led the way with three tries as Watsonians also made it 15 points from 15 this term to date with a 52-24 triumph at Bridgehaugh against previously unbeaten Stirling County.

County did pick up a losing bonus point.

And Corstorphine got their first win of the season in some style with an 80-29 triumph at Ayr.
