Top Scots learning to lead

24 Jan 2019

A group of top Scottish age-grade, Scotland Women and Fosroc Academy players recently undertook a three-day leadership training course at the 45 commando base in Arbroath, led by Royal Marines from 45 Commando.

Learning outcomes from the session included effective functional leadership, developing team cohesion, decision making under pressure and effective communication.

These skills were delivered in a series of scenario-based physical and mental challenges designed to translate into high performance behaviours within sport and specifically to have a positive impact on the players own and their team’s performances.

The initiative is part of the ongoing strategic partnership with Scottish Rugby and the Royal Marines and saw 20 players, three of which were senior Women’s internationalists, take part.

The course was led by Sargent Marv Thomas and Sargent Karl Anderson from 45 Commando, while staff from the Scottish Rugby Fosroc Academy were also in attendance, to learn and support the players through their challenges.

Scottish Rugby’s Talent ID and Performance Projects Manager, Grant McKelvey, said “This leadership camp followed on from the session we had with 43 Commando earlier in the season.

“The players on this camp all applied for the opportunity to once again learn from the best and have been well tested.

“Once again we wish to thank our Royal Marines partners for the opportunity to learn from them. I’m looking forward to seeing the players apply their learnings in the various different squads and environments they’re all now playing in.”
