Townsend: It was a squad effort to win in Wales

Scotland recorded their first in Wales since 2002, thanks to a second-half try from replacement hooker Stuart McInally.
Stuart Hogg, Finn Russell and Adam Hastings each kicked a penalty which gives Scotland a morale-boosting win ahead of this season’s Autumn Nations Cup.
Speaking after the game, Scotland head coach was clearly delighted to get the win and praised the whole squad for getting the result at Parc y Scarlets.
Townsend said: “At times, it probably wasn’t the prettiest game to watch. I was really pleased with the energy in the second-half. We started the second-half better, we had a bit more punch about our ball carrying and as the second-half wore on we started to get rewards around the set-piece and around our carries. I thought our bench had a big impact, it was a squad effort today and I’m really proud of the effort.”
“We do have players who can play in multiple positons. Stuart Hogg stepped up at 10, Blair Kinghorn moved around and Scott Steele won his first cap on the wing and had to make a few tackles. They won’t rmember which position they [played, just that they were part of a winning performance.”
Next up for Scotland is a trip to face Italy in a fortnight and Townsend knows that despite the win they’ll need to make improvements to their game.
He added: “We can play a lot better and we’ll need to play better. There was a lack of cohesion at times, but the fundamentals are there – the set-piece and the defence and we know with some of the individuals in our squad we can do some really good things in attack.
“You get confidence from games like that, a character building win away from home, so we’ve got to make sure we keep the momentum going into the Autumn Nations Cup.”
