Former Scotland internationalist Richie Vernon has announced he will retire at the end of the 2018/19 season following a thirteen-year career.
The centre joined London Scottish last summer from Glasgow Warriors, where he had made almost 100 appearances, including being part of the Warriors squad that won the 2015 PRO12 title. He began his career with Border Reivers and also spent time with Premiership side Sale Sharks.
Vernon represented Scotland at U18, U19 and U20 levels before making his debut against Fiji in November 2009 at BT Murrayfield. A year later, he made his starting debut against New Zealand, which was followed by a replacement appearance in the famous 21-17 win over South Africa. He also played for Scotland 7s, competing at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
He earned 24 caps for Scotland and took part in the both the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups – as a number eight in 2011 and as a centre in the 2015 competition. He made his final appearance in the the Scotland jersey off the bench against Australia at Twickenham in the World Cup quarter-final.
Talking about his decision to retire, Richie said: “After 13 years of professional rugby I know the time is right to hang up the boots. It’s been an incredible experience and one that has allowed me to realise the dreams I had as a young man in representing Scotland and winning a league title with the Warriors.
“I’d like to thank my wife Sophie and my Mum and Dad for their support throughout my career. I’ve been lucky to play for some great clubs with outstanding players, coaches and support staff and I have memories with them that I can treasure for life.”
