Scottish Rugby is supporting Women’s Sport Week 2017 to inspire more women and girls to give rugby a go. A range of women are sharing their rugby journey on scottishrugby.org this week to encourage beginners or those who want to return to the sport to #BeTheBestYou.Name: Rachael Kerr Age: 26Club: Hillhead Jordanhill – Beginner PlayerTell us about your rugby journey…I started watching Scotland in the Six Nations recently and have been to a few games at BT Murrayfield, but I never thought I would actually ever want to play the game.I played badminton at primary school and through to the start of secondary school, as well as playing volleyball in secondary school and at university where I really enjoyed the team aspect. I moved to Glasgow from South Lanarkshire a year ago and immediately started trying to find a new sport to stay fit and healthy and to meet new people. I spent a couple of months rowing on the Clyde River and while it was great fun I didn’t think it was the sport for me.I reached out to Hillhead Jordanhill and they invited me to their #BeTheBestYou women’s rugby session in May. That was the first time I played rugby and I really enjoyed it. As soon as pre-season training starts I’m going to join the club and start training. What do you love about rugby?Playing as part of a team. Each person has an important role to play and there is a role for everybody. I also like that it’s played outdoors as up until now I’ve mostly been involved in sports which take place indoors. What would you say to women and girls thinking about trying rugby? Try it! I’m glad I did and I can’t wait to start training and playing. I’ve had people tell me it’s not a very ‘girly’ sport. Hopefully the more women who get involved and succeed will change those attitudes and I’m happy to be one of them.Interested in giving rugby a go?With more women’s and girls’ teams being established in Scotland every year, it’s an ideal time to try rugby at a club near you at one of our #BeTheBestYou taster sessions this summer. They’re free, fun and for anyone who wants to try rugby for the first time or perhaps return to the sport after a break. Go to scottishrugby.org/bestyou to sign up now!
