29 Apr 2014
Some of Scotland’s most promising young rugby talents have been unveiled today (Tuesday 29 April) as part of an exclusive sports programme that will see them receive a first-hand, behind the scenes insight to this summer’s Commonwealth Games.’Achieve 2014′ will see the players given an exclusive encounter of Glasgow 2014, led by experienced mentors, many of whom have competed at past Commonwealth Games, a learning experience and springboard to help further and develop their skills with a view to them being the stars of future Commonwealth Games.Today it was revealed that Scotland under-18 players, George Watson’s College wingers Robbie Nairn and Ben Robbins, Merchiston Castle School’s Hugh Fraser (scrum-half) and Scotland under-20’s Angus Rennie (Aberdeen Grammar Rugby’s wing/full-back/centre) will take part in the programme.Angus Rennie, said: “I’m over the moon to be part of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. It will be a wonderful experience and a chance to see how all the athletes train and adapt to their surroundings for competition.I hope I can spend some time with Scotland 7s and understand how they train, so I can then apply that to my game in order to improve. “This is an opportunity that I hope to learn a great deal from.”Former Scotland rugby captain Gavin Hastings, in his role as ambassador, launched ‘Achieve 2014’ in October last year.More than 70 athletes from the 17 sports to be played at this summer’s games were announced today. The programme aims to propel young athletes onto sporting success by preparing them for the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa, the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in St Lucia and the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast.
