Edinburgh’s top young rugby players lifted one million kilograms today to raise money for Doddie Weir in his fight against motor neuron disease. The former Scotland lock recently revealed he is suffering from the condition, announcing his diagnosis to raise awareness of the illness. He is joining forces with researchers to help tackle the degenerative disease, which occurs when specialist nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord stop functioning properly.Players and staff at the BT Sport Academy in Edinburgh completed the challenge in 63 minutes using a circuit of lifts divided between bench press, back squat, deadlift, and barbell row.BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy manager, Graeme Beveridge, said: “It was long, exhausting and painful work but the players and staff are delighted with our achievement and to help raise awareness and funds to support both Doddie and other sufferers across Scotland.”The group have so far reached£2300 of the their£2000 target.
