Stirling County achieved the double in the Girls’ Club Cup finals on the international pitch as dominant performances from both the U15 and U18 sides saw the club lift the silverware in the Cup competition.

In the U15 Shield final, Caithness recorded a comprehensive 63-26 against Lismore, while Biggar overpowered Hillhead Jordanhill in the U18 Shield final (76-17).

U18 Cup match-report

Stirling County claimed the Girls’ U18 Cup after recording an impressive 22-44 victory against a tenacious Cartha Queen’s Park side.

It was a positive start from Stirling County, as winger Neve Henderson initiated the scoring after five minutes.

Cartha rallied when Sarah Macpherson scampered over the line for the Glasgow side’s first score, but Stirling County fired back with two tries in quick succession courtesy of Freya Walker and Ruby Simpson, with Abbie Ledwidge adding the extras to Walker’s try.

Following a period of prolonged pressure, Cartha were able to reduce Stirling’s early lead when Amy Mackinnon darted over the whitewash.

Stirling County were able to extend their lead going into the break following a further try by Orla Proctor.

County started the second-half as they ended the first and scored another try when player-of-the-match Katie McLaren pushed past the defence to score.

Moments later, Cartha were able to strike back when Rosa Cobban scored under the posts, with Caitlin Bell successfully converting the score.

Stirling County took command for the rest of the encounter as Niamh Woods and Eva Fisher crossed the line, with Ledwidge converting Woods’ try.

The crowd were on their feet following a scintillating solo-effort from Evie Wills which saw the full-back sprint down the left wing to score for Stirling County.

As the second-half drew to a close, Cartha battled valiantly and were rewarded for their endeavours with one last try, but Stirling’s dominant performance in the closing period saw the side claim the Girls’ U18 Cup.

Stirling County Head Coach, Al Wilson, said: “I’ve coached a lot of the girls through primary school and I’ve seen them grow and develop as players.

“They have made a huge amount of sacrifices to be where they are now but the strength of character and the bonds they have as a team are incredible.”

U15 Cup match-report

In the U15 Cup, Stirling County defended their title following an impressive performance against Highland (51-29).

Stirling County’s Natasha McEwan opened the scoring for her side before Highland responded through April McKenzie who dotted down under the posts.

Both sides were able to produce promising attacks throughout the first-half, but Stirling County were able to extend their lead courtesy of tries by Jenna Duncan, Ceilidh Ainsworth and Freya MacColl.

Highland brought the first-half to a close with a try by full-back Suzanna MacDonald as the side carried a 15-point deficit at the interval.

Stirling County looked in control in the opening exchanges of the second-half as Brogan Henderson and Tessia Smyth crossed the line, but the momentum started to swing when the plucky Highland side retaliated with two tries by Aicha Sutcliffe and Rhiannon MacLeod.

Stirling were soon back on the scoreboard when Natsaha McEwan and player-of-the-match Cyan Van Schalkwyk raced over the whitewash.

Highland concluded the scoring when Aicha Sutcliffe sprinted across the line in the final minute of play, but it wasn’t enough for the side as Stirling claimed the Girls’ U15 Cup for the second consecutive year.

U18 Shield match-report

Biggar scored 12 tries in a one-sided scoreline to decide the U18 Girls Club Shield final, securing the trophy by 76-17 against Hillhead Jordanhill.

The central belt side made a lightening start scoring three quick tries which set the tone against a skilful Hillhead Jordanhill team, who competed until the final whistle.

With attacking threats in the forwards and the backs Biggar worked hard to limit Hillhead to a pair of tries in the opening half and a single score in the second period. Hillhead number 8 Eve Thomson scoring two of the three tries. The halftime score was 43-12.

Flanker Geraldine Kimm was awarded player of the match for her try scoring exploits and being at the centre of the good work Biggar did in attack and defence.

Biggar centre Rachel Philipps scored a spectacular restart return in the first half and fly-half Emma Orr also dotted down after a positive solo run to highlight just two of the Biggar scores.

Scrum-half Katie McPherson was accurate with the boot slotting seven conversions and scored a try.

Biggar head coach Calum Taylor said: “The difference today was we have a group of girls who have been playing together for a number of years, they have really gelled well together as a team.

“You have some days when things really come together, some days they don’t, and we were lucky in that respect today.

“We base everything we do off our defence, if we give the ball away we back our defence to get it back. I was pleased that even with the tries Hills scored they were knocking on the door for a while and had to work hard for them and we didn’t give them away easily.

“I though our back row were excellent and when your forwards get you on the front foot our backs are dangerous and can take advantage of that.”

U15 Shield match-report

There was another high scoring win in the U15s Girls Club Shield Final which saw Caithness rewarded for their journey south with a 63-26 victory over Lismore.

Lismore book-ended the match with the first and last tries but couldn’t hold Caithness on the scoreboard for any long periods of the match.

Caithness centre Shannon Passotti scored four tries and along with number 8 Morgan Nellies supplied a power game that Lismore couldn’t contain in defence.

Full back Chloe Miller finished off some neat handling from the Caithness backs and Hannah Dunnett scored her first try in an opening half which generated a 20-point lead for the Caledonia side.

Lismore centre Morgan Welsh scored a brace of tries and fly-half Katie Weighill also dotted down and added three conversions as the west coast team tried to generate momentum on the scoreboard and haul back Caithness.

Player of the Match Hannah Dunnett slotted four conversions herself and scored a second try and was the catalyst for the positive play Caithness brought to the match.

Caithness Head Coach, Sinclair Dunnett said: “The team has been growing all season and they just put everything together today.

“They have really played with confidence over the last three or four games and come up with a lot of the moves themselves and have enough savvy to pull them off in games.

“I’m really proud of them, some of the players travel 60 miles to get to training and they hardly miss a session and their commitment is key.

“It was well worth the journey down and hopefully we will be back next year.”
