Schools & Youth Conferences round up
The Schools & Youth Conference programme is continuing to develop young players across the country with regular fixtures for schools and clubs. The 35-conference structure is designed to retain players in the game beyond their teenage years, with over 10,000 involved in 1,894 games within schools and clubs across Scotland last season. Schools and clubs with five or more teams in place are grouped into conferences with points awarded for each age-group win to determine an overall standing for a club/school within a conference. In the Club Brown Conference last weekend, East Kilbride and Allan Glens went head-to-head across all five age-groups with mixed results for either side.In the under-16 fixture, Allan Glens overcame East Kilbride 46-21 at Torrence House in what was a game of two halves.Although East Kilbride went a try down within the opening minutes of the match, the hosts maintained possession for the majority of the first-half with tries from Matthew Fletcher and Euan Ferrie, both converted by Fraser Jackson.A further score from Matthew Bell developed a convincing lead for East Kilbride but celebrations were cut short as Allan Glens came storming back with two tries before a half-time score of 21-17.After the interval, the visitors overpowered East Kilbride at the set-piece and within open play to score several tries without reply to seal victory at under-16 level. In the under-15 fixture, East Kilbride defeated Allan Glens 39-5 after an impressive start led to the side’s first try from Ewan Stirling, converted by Lucas Aitken. Cameron McMillan followed-up with East Kilbride’s second score and Cameron Rennie secured two tries before the break.Rennie continued to probe and managed to score a further two with Lucas converting one, as McMillan bagged his hat-trick to keep the scoreboard ticking for East Kilbride. Allan Glens enjoyed spells of possession towards the latter stages but the hosts were able to close down any threat. In the under-18 fixture, East Kilbride pushed past Allan Glens 52-3 having already lost out to their conference rivals earlier in the season.East Kilbride then went ahead with a try from Ethan Aitken, who ran in from half-way after quick turnover ball was moved wide.Captain Connor Wilson barged over from the 22 for the hosts before Callum Connelly-Tennock rounded off a fine set piece move for a score.Allan Glens stand-off Joe Ross slotted a penalty from long range to put Glens on the scoreboard but it was East Kilbride who went over next with Aitken securing his second try after receiving from centre partner Kyle Dixon.Aitken converted all four tries to settle the half-time score in favour of East Kilbride, 28-3.The second-half began with East Kilbride still on the front foot, with the first try scored by Kyle Dixon. Aitken completed his hat-trick by out pacing the defence to the corner.Dixon grabbed his second from close range following powerful play from the forwards. Substitute Garry Speedie finished the scoring with the final play by capitalising on a mistake from the tired Glens defence. With a further two conversions from Aitken, the final score resulted in East Kilbride claiming a comprehensive win over their West region rivals.Overall, Allan Glens defeated East Kilbride across all three under-16, under-14 and under-13 age-groups to go top of the Club Brown Conference table. In the Girls’ President’s Conference, Stirling County are leading with both the under-15 and under-18 sides overcoming Ayr at the weekend.Biggar pushed past Caithness at both under-15 and under-18 level, while Murrayfield Wanderers overcame Hillhead Jordanhill in both under-15 and under-18 fixtures. This weekend’s pick of the schools’ conference fixtures takes the form of George Watson’s College B teams visiting Preston Lodge High School in the Green Conference.Merchiston Castle School host Stewart’s Melville in the Red Conference, while Allan Glens welcome Dalziel in the Club Brown Conference in an interesting clash.Remember to share your images of conference rugby with @Scotlandteam by tweeting #confrugby.
