Scotland 7s set for Elche Tournament
Head Coach Ciaran Beattie – who this week announced a core group for the season ahead – has named a 12-man squad for the round-robin tournament where the Scots are drawn with Ireland, Portugal and local invitational side Viator Barbarians in Pool B.
Scotland 7s continue their preparation for the upcoming HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in this weekend’s international Elche 7s near Valencia in Spain – to access a live stream of the games visit https://elche7s.com/en-directo/.
Added to the squad for this weekend’s Spanish fixtures are Edinburgh Accies playmaker Richard Mill and Callum Young, of Jed-Forest, both of whom impressed in a recent training game with the main squad.
Ahead of the Elche 7s, Beattie said: “We are grateful to be able to call upon Richard and Callum for this weekend.
“Richard has kindly been afforded the time off by Fettes, where he teaches, as well as Accies, while Callum comes to us with Jed’s best wishes ahead of their own game this weekend.
“Elche gives our guys the chance to have a hit-out in tournament conditions similar to what we’ll face throughout the season. It’s always a valuable way to gauge where a squad is in terms of its preparation.”
Callum Young will follow his brothers Lewis and Gregor in playing international rugby for Scotland, something that Jed backs coach Fraser Harkness explained makes the club extremely proud.
He said: “There’s definitely something in the water down here, with these three brothers following in the footsteps of some other famous names.
“Callum is raw but he has real talent and we’re thrilled to see how he goes at a higher level.
“Jed-Forest will never stand in the way of players progressing to play for Scotland.”
Scotland’s three Pool B matches will determine their schedule for Sunday’s fixture list and times.
