Australia won the toss so will kick off, defending the north end in the first half. The conditions having an immediate impact on foothold and ball carry for both teams with players having difficulty holding on to the ball as the monsoon conditions continue. Scotland creating pressure at the breakdown and adapting better to the elements in the opening five minutes.Throw-in from Ford hits the target for Scotland who pressure their way to within 5m of the Australian whitewash. Blair to Laidlaw to Grant who harries the line, before the ball passes to Blair and slips from his grasp. Rain coming sideways now. A burst from Ansbro there as Scotland continue to play the game within the Australian 22. Lamont makes a great tackle on Tomane to stop any idea of he opposition leaving their 22. Fifteen minutes gone and it’s a penalty to Scotland (Aus collapse the maul) as Laidlaw lines it up from the left – but the elements conspire to ensure it hooks to the left in the wind. Oustanding up and under and chase from Hogg that nearly gets first point on the board for Scotland but Tomane scrambles to cover the ball. Australia doing the hard yards now as the action moves closer to the halfway line but it’s still 0-0 going into the second period of the first half. Two minutes later and Laidlaw again has the penalty chance, a straighter approach this time and he nails it. 3-0. And it’s 6-0 after 28 minutes after another penalty slotted by Laidlaw – the result of great work at the breakdown from Barclay. Wallabies on a pick-and-go roll as the edge towards the line now,Higginbotham spills the ball but Australia win the penalty (Scotland not rolling away) and Harris lines it up – just vertical rain now so he slots it successfully. 6-3Good run by Strokosch but Scotland penalised for not releasing. Ping pong rugby across the halfway line as advantage switches back and forth and somewhere, in the stands, the pipes fire up.Lamont leaves the field, just before the half-time hooter, as Tom Brown comes on to win his first Scotland cap. HT: 6-3 And they’re off for the second half, Scotland having to compete against the conditions as well as the Wallabies, now playing into the wind. Two minutes in, Rennie penalised for not releasing allowing Harris another pop between the sticks, successully slotted, to make it 6-6.Ball picked up by the aptly named Slipper, for Australia, but Hogg scoops up and clears to touch. Lineout to the Wallabies but good steal from the Scots – turnovers to date in the game now hits 18. Short lineout ball to Gray, to Rennie and back to Gray but Scotland – Murray – then penalised for sealing off. The attempt from Harris, from near-on halfway, skims the underside of the woodwork – no score, still 6-6.Timani leaves the field for Australia and Simmons on, who immediately gets involved in the action with a push and scrabble for the line, the sub claiming the scor. Off to the TMO. But no score.Scrum 5m out, Higginbotham goes for the line but Strokosch takes him down, the domino effect taking out the ref, too. Another scrum to the Australians, Scotland absorbing the ensuing pressure right on the line.Great defence from the Scots, Blair putting his body on the line. Australia pulled up for obstruction and Scotland have the chance to clear themselves out of immediate danger. Blair, who took a knock in that last exchange on the line, leaves the field to be replaced by Cusiter. The conditions continuing to take their toll as Hooper comes on for Dennis, two minutes later, with the Australians visibly shivering now.Great tackling from Kellock and Strokosch as the Wallabies make another assault upfield. Lineout ball for the Scots, Ford to Gray but the ball slips from his grasp. Less than ten minutes on the clock and the Scots have fought hard to keep the scores level so far.Berrick Barnes has a bullish attempt at a drop goal but it comes up short (72m).An offence at the breakdown, by De Luca, gives Australia another crack at the uprights, alebit from the halfway line, the wind behind Harris. He fails to get a strike on it, though and it wobbles off beneath the posts. Kick-off from Australia is scooped up well by Hogg who clears to touch. Under four minutes to go and the action returns to the halfway line, spilling over into Wallaby territory. Scotland mount an assault in the closing minutes, spearheaded by Laidlaw – scrum to the Scots as the hooter sounds for full time. Nearly two minutes into the red time and Scotland have a penalty – will it be a repeat of 2009? Rennie holds the ball for Laidlaw as he nails the kick between the uprights and Scotland claim victory 9-6. Thirty years since their last win on Australian soil – a pearl jubilee performance.
