Scotland top pool and progress to Cup quarter-finals in Glasgow
Scotland 7s topped their pool and progressed to the Cup quarter-finals today at the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s, the first time they have done so since 2010 when they won the Plate trophy in Edinburgh. They will now play South Africa at 12.42pm tomorrow (Sunday 4 May). The Scots beat Australia, 19-7, USA, 26-0 and Spain, 33-12 in front of an 11,710 strong crowd that created a noisy atmosphere in their three ties.Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: “What a great day and a wonderful atmosphere!”The players performed to the level they are capable of today and they couldn’t have done anymore. We hope that a big crowd will come out and support us tomorrow and that we can continue to progress in the Cup competition on day two.”We have now won six games on the trot between here and Hong Kong, but tomorrow the making and measuring of this team will be judged.”The team opened the day with a resilient win against Australia, with Scott Riddell putting in an impressive defensive show. He opened the scoring and was then followed by captain Colin Gregor and Lee Jones.Next up, it was USA and their defence continued to improve. This time Richie Vernon stood out for his work at the breakdown and James Eddie’s physicality up front, as he performed in front of a familiar crowd, given this is the home of his club, Glasgow Warriors. On the scoreboard in this match was Lee Jones, who showed his flair on the wing, with a brace, Nick De Luca with his first sevens try since 2006 and Chris Dean. Finally, against Spain Eddie came out the blocks flying and notched two tries. Vernon also added one to his tally that now stands at 23 tries and 13 caps. Gregor also scored his second of the day. He converted on nine occasions. The tie ended on a nostalgic note as Andrew Turnbull blazed in for his 149th try for Scotland on the circuit. Also standing out in the team today was Glasgow Warriors’ Scott Wight, who commanded all three games from stand-off. Scotland 7s last topped their group in Tokyo in 2013.
